Chapter 9 - The Price of Staying Quiet

Grace expected handcuffs by morning.

Instead, there were more questions.

Where had the music box been?

Who could access her apartment?

When had Nora given it to her?

Grace hadn’t been given it directly.

Adrian’s housekeeper had packed childhood keepsakes after the funeral.

That mattered.

Everything mattered.

Ortiz explained that the financial records needed verification and the recording needed examination.

“His voice is right there.”

“I hear it,” the detective said.

“Then why is he still at home?”

“Because I need a case that holds after tonight.”

Grace hated the answer.

Later, she would be grateful for it.

That afternoon, Adrian filed an emergency request concerning Owen.

His attorney claimed Grace was coaching a grieving child and stealing confidential foundation records.

A declaration attached to the filing included Grace’s original statement.

The one she had signed.

The one she had corrected only after Owen spoke.

Grace read the words until they blurred.

Ruth took the pages from her.

“Stop punishing yourself long enough to help him.”

“How?”

“Get a lawyer. Tell the whole truth. Follow the plan.”

Grace had three hundred and eighteen dollars.

Ruth called an attorney she knew through an old school case.

By evening, Grace was sitting across from a woman named Marisol Chen.

Marisol listened without interrupting.

Then she said, “You won’t win this by pretending you’ve never been afraid.”

“I don’t need to win anything.”

“You need the court to understand why your account changed.”

Grace looked at the door.

Owen was in the hallway with Ruth, drawing a lighthouse.

“What if they give him back?”

“We are going to ask for protection. I can’t promise the result.”

It was the second answer that day Grace hated.

It was also honest.

At the temporary hearing the following morning, Adrian wore the same dark suit he had worn to the gala.

He didn’t look at Grace.

He looked at Owen’s empty chair.

The child wasn’t there.

That seemed to bother him more.

After hearing the preliminary evidence, the judge kept Owen with Ruth under temporary supervision and prohibited unsupervised contact with Adrian.

Grace finally breathed.

Then Adrian’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor, before we conclude, there is evidence of a payment made to Ms. Bennett shortly after the death.”

Grace’s stomach dropped.

Ten thousand dollars.

Adrian had called it help with her hospital debt.

Now his lawyer called it something else.

“Compensation for silence.”
