CHAPTER 14: THE CROWN OR THE CHILD

CHAPTER 14: THE CROWN OR THE CHILD
The royal council argued that Noah’s missing years made him vulnerable.
Some claimed he had been manipulated.
Others whispered that a child raised by criminals could not be trusted near the crown.
Evelyn entered the council chamber carrying no documents.
No lawyers stood beside her.
Only Noah.
An elderly councilman addressed her.
“This is not about love, Lady Evelyn. It is about stability.”
“No,” Evelyn replied. “It is about fear.”
“We cannot ignore the boy’s past.”
“He survived kidnapping, imprisonment, and an assassination attempt. His past is not a stain.”
Noah stood quietly beside her.
Another councilman leaned forward.
“What happens if the child has been conditioned by Prince Alexander?”
Noah looked at him.
“Then ask me something.”
The man hesitated.
“What would you do if you became Duke tomorrow?”
Noah thought for a moment.
“I’d open every locked room.”
Several council members exchanged glances.
“What does that mean?” the councilman asked.
“It means people like Alexander survive because important families hide ugly things. I would make sure children can tell the truth even when powerful adults don’t want to hear it.”
The room fell silent.
The Duke entered with his cane.
“I have spent my life protecting this institution,” he said. “Sometimes I protected it when I should have protected people.”
He removed the ceremonial signet ring from his hand.
“If this council believes my grandson is unworthy because he survived what we failed to prevent, then this institution is unworthy of him.”
He placed the ring on the table.
Evelyn stared at her father.
“Are you resigning?”
“If they reject Noah, I will.”
The council called for a private vote.
An hour later, the chairman returned.
“Noah Oliver Ashbourne will be formally recognized as the Duke’s heir.”
Reporters gathered outside the palace.
But Noah did not celebrate.
He looked at Evelyn.
“Did Grandfather almost give up the crown for me?”
“Yes.”
“Would you?”
She knelt before him.
“Without taking a breath.”
He wrapped his arms around her.
Inside the palace, bells began to ring.

For the first time in seven years, they were not announcing tragedy.
They were announcing a child’s return.
