Chapter 1 - THE DEAD WOMAN IN THE BALLROOM

“Mommy!”
The word hit the ballroom harder than a gunshot.
Damian Harlow turned so fast that champagne spilled over his hand.
His three-year-old son was running.
Not toward him.
Not toward Celeste Vane, the elegant woman Damian had planned to introduce as his future wife.
Oliver was sprinting toward a maid standing near the far wall.
“Oliver!” the nanny shouted.
The boy didn’t slow down.
The maid looked terrified.
A silver tray shook in her hands.
Then Oliver crashed into her legs.
The tray slipped.
Glass exploded across the marble floor.
The maid dropped to her knees and grabbed the child.
For one second, she looked like she wanted to push him away.
Then she broke.
Her arms locked around him.
“Oliver…”
Damian stopped breathing.
That voice.
Soft.
Broken.
Familiar.
Oliver buried his face against her neck.
“I knew you’d come back,” he sobbed. “I told Daddy you’d come back.”
Whispers rolled through the ballroom.
Everybody there knew the story.
Eliza Harlow.
Damian’s wife.
Dead for two years.
Her car had gone off Blackridge Mountain during a storm. The vehicle had burned in the ravine.
They found her wedding ring.
They found blood.
They never found her body.
Damian had stood beside an empty coffin while reporters took pictures from behind iron gates.
He had spent two years learning how to live with a hole in his chest.
And tonight, he had finally decided to move on.
Celeste stepped forward.
“Someone get that woman away from him.”
The maid flinched.
Oliver screamed.
“No!”
He clung tighter.
Damian raised one hand.
“Don’t touch them.”
The room went silent.
Celeste stared at him.
“Damian, he’s confused.”
Damian wasn’t listening.
He was watching the maid.
Dark hair pinned beneath a plain housekeeping cap.
No makeup.
A faint scar running from her temple toward her ear.
Different clothes.
Thinner face.
But the eyes…
God.
Those eyes.
Damian took one slow step.
Then another.
The maid kept looking down.
“Look at me,” he said.
She didn’t.
His voice hardened.
“Look at me.”
Her chin lifted.
Their eyes met.
Something inside Damian tore open.
Same gray-green eyes.
Same tiny gold fleck near the left pupil.
Same look she used to give him when she was scared but refused to admit it.
His lips went numb.
“Eliza?”
The woman’s face collapsed.
Tears filled her eyes.
But before she could answer, Celeste suddenly dropped her champagne glass.
It shattered beside her shoe.
Damian looked back.
Celeste had gone pale.
Not shocked.
Not confused.
Afraid.

And in that instant, Damian realized something far worse than seeing his dead wife alive.
Celeste recognized her too.
