CHAPTER 14 — Eleanor’s Final Secret

CHAPTER 14 — Eleanor’s Final Secret

They followed the music to the nursery.

The second music box sat open beside the twins’ beds.

Eleanor stood near the window.

She had been discharged from the hospital that afternoon.

“I opened it,” she said.

Clara looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because there is one truth left.”

Eleanor removed the inner wooden panel.

Beneath it was a folded medical record.

She handed it to Alexander.

He read the first page.

Then he sat down heavily.

The twins were not Vanessa’s biological children.

Their birth records had been altered.

Alexander looked at Eleanor.

“Whose children are they?”

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Mine.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Alexander reread the document.

Seven years after Amelia’s birth, while imprisoned at Blackwater, Eleanor had given birth to twin boys.

Alexander struggled to understand.

“How?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“Before Vanessa arranged my disappearance, Dr. Hale collected embryos created during our fertility treatments.”

Alexander remembered.

He and Eleanor had tried to conceive before Amelia.

Several embryos had been stored.

“Vanessa used a surrogate,” Eleanor said. “She wanted children genetically connected to you. She believed it would secure her place in your family.”

“But the eggs were yours.”

“Yes.”

Noah looked between the adults.

“What does that mean?”

Eleanor knelt carefully.

“It means I am your birth mother.”

Nicholas stared at her.

“Like Amelia?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you come?”

Eleanor’s voice broke.

“I didn’t know you were alive until recently.”

Noah looked at Clara.

“Is she our sister?”

Clara smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

The boys threw their arms around her.

Alexander remained seated, overwhelmed by the enormity of what had been stolen from all of them.

Eleanor approached him.

“I don’t want to replace anyone.”

“Vanessa was never truly their mother.”

“She was the only mother they knew.”

“They feared her.”

“That does not erase their confusion.”

Alexander looked at the children.

“What happens now?”

Eleanor took a slow breath.

“We tell them the truth. We give them time. We stop making decisions for them.”

Clara glanced at her suitcase downstairs.

“I don’t have to leave tonight.”

Noah looked hopeful.

“Or tomorrow?”

Clara smiled.

“Not tomorrow either.”

Alexander met her eyes.

There was warmth between them, but also caution.

Too much had happened for promises.

Eleanor opened the music box again.

The lullaby filled the nursery.

This time, she sang.

Clara joined her.

Then Amelia.

Noah and Nicholas listened in silence.

Halfway through the song, Alexander realized something.

The melody had never been about grief.

May you like

It was a promise.

No matter how far a family was scattered, the song would lead them home.
