Chapter 11 - WHAT LORELAI REMEMBERED

Lorelai was eight when her mother died.
Chadworth had assumed she remembered almost nothing about that night.
He was wrong.
They sat together in the library.
No police.
No lawyers.
Just father and daughter.
“Baby,” he said gently, “Dr. Vale told me you saw someone at the hospital.”
Lorelai looked down.
“I don’t like remembering.”
“I know.”
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
She looked surprised.
He continued.
“You never have to tell me anything just because I ask. But if you want to, I’m here.”
That was new.
For both of them.
Lorelai stayed silent for almost a minute.
Then she said, “I woke up in Grandma’s apartment.”
“You were staying with her.”
“I know.”
“I remember going to the hospital.”
Chadworth frowned.
“What?”
“Sabina took me.”
His heart stopped.
“Sabina?”
Lorelai nodded.
“I didn’t know her name then.”
Chadworth felt sick.
“Why would she take you?”
“She said Mom wanted to see me.”
“Did Mom?”
Lorelai shook her head.
“When we got there, Mom was sleeping.”
Chadworth tried to keep his voice steady.
“What happened?”
“A lady came in.”
“The nurse?”
“I think.”
“What did she look like?”
Lorelai described her.
Brown hair.
Red glasses.
Silver cross necklace.
Nina later confirmed Kelly Morrow matched the description.
“What did Sabina do?”
“She talked to the lady in the hallway.”
“Could you hear them?”
“Some.”
“What did they say?”
Lorelai shut her eyes.
Chadworth waited.
Finally:
“Sabina said, ‘Do it before he gets back.’”
Chadworth’s skin turned cold.
“What else?”
“The lady said, ‘What if she wakes up?’”
Lorelai started crying.
Chadworth moved closer.
She leaned into him.
“Then Sabina said, ‘She won’t.’”
Chadworth held his daughter while rage moved through him like fire.
Lorelai whispered, “I thought I dreamed it.”
“No.”
“I told Sabina later.”
“When?”
“When you started dating her.”
Chadworth pulled back.
“What?”
“I told her I remembered seeing her at the hospital.”
His face went numb.
“What did she say?”
“She said I was confused.”
“And then?”
“She started being mean.”
Everything clicked.
Sabina hadn’t become cruel because she disliked the girls.
She had become cruel because Lorelai remembered.
The threats.
The isolation.
The blue room.
The emotional abuse.
It had all been about breaking her confidence.
Making her doubt herself.
Chadworth felt ashamed all over again.
“You tried to tell me?”
Lorelai cried harder.
“Lots of times.”
He closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
She shook her head.
“No, Dad—”
“Yes.”
He held her face gently.
“I should have listened before you had to prove anything.”
That afternoon, Nina returned.
“We found Kelly Morrow.”
Chadworth stood.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Arizona.”
“Will she talk?”
“She already is.”
His pulse increased.
Nina handed him a summary.
Kelly admitted Elliot paid her to alter Elizabeth’s IV medication.
Not enough to look like poisoning.
Enough to worsen respiratory suppression in an already fragile patient.
But there was more.
“She says Sabina gave the final instruction.”
Chadworth closed his eyes.
Nina continued.
“And she kept messages.”
“Messages?”
“Emails. Old burner phone backups.”
That was the evidence they had been missing.
Sabina hadn’t just exploited Elizabeth’s illness.
She had accelerated her death.
Then Nina’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“Where?”
She hung up.
“What happened?”
“Sabina made bail.”
Chadworth stared.
“What?”
“Her attorneys moved fast.”
“She can’t come here.”
“She won’t.”
“How do you know?”
May you like
Nina looked toward the window.
“Because ten minutes ago, one of your school security officers reported Gemma missing.”
