Chapter 13 - THE NAME ON THE FINAL FILE

State police took Vale and Ethan.

Not Boston police.

Roman didn’t trust enough people locally yet.

Luca had emailed Owen’s decrypted files to federal investigators, three newspapers, two attorneys, and, for reasons nobody understood, his mother.

“Insurance,” he said.

His mother apparently opened emails immediately.

We returned to Roman’s estate just before sunrise.

Titan slept with his head on my thigh in the SUV.

Roman watched him.

Then me.

“Thank you.”

I looked out the window.

“For what?”

“Stopping me.”

“From killing Vale?”

“Yes.”

“I considered letting you.”

“That’s comforting.”

“He hit me.”

“I noticed.”

Silence.

Then Roman said, “My uncle is still free.”

Not for long.

By eight that morning, reporters surrounded Calder headquarters.

Federal agents raided two offices.

Declan Shaw disappeared.

Malcolm gave another statement denying everything.

And then Luca found one final encrypted folder.

We gathered in the estate kitchen.

Rosa made coffee.

Nobody argued.

Luca opened the file.

Owen appeared on-screen.

Alive when recorded.

Tired.

Scared.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, I probably didn’t make it.”

Roman lowered his head.

Owen continued.

“Black Harbor is controlled by Malcolm Calder. But Malcolm answers to one partner.”

Roman frowned.

“One partner?”

Owen held up a document.

Share transfers.

Offshore corporations.

Property records.

A name appeared.

DECLAN SHAW.

Then another.

Roman leaned closer.

NATHANIEL CALDER.

Roman went white.

I looked at him.

“Who is Nathaniel?”

His voice barely came out.

“My father.”

Silence.

Roman’s father had supposedly died twenty-two years earlier in a boating accident with Roman’s mother.

Owen continued.

“Nathaniel Calder created Black Harbor. Malcolm inherited it after Nathaniel’s death.”

Roman closed his eyes.

The empire wasn’t merely corrupted by his uncle.

It began with his father.

Owen then said something that changed everything.

“But the boating accident may not have been an accident.”

Roman opened his eyes.

Owen held up an old ledger.

“Malcolm began moving money three days before Nathaniel died.”

Rosa gasped.

Roman stared at the screen.

His uncle may have killed his parents.

Owen continued.

“I believe Malcolm killed Nathaniel because Nathaniel planned to shut Black Harbor down.”

Roman’s face cracked for the first time.

Not tears.

Something deeper.

A lifetime rearranging itself.

Then Owen said:

“There’s one living witness.”

Luca paused the video.

Roman whispered, “Who?”

Luca continued.

Owen looked into the camera.

“Daniel Hayes.”

My heart stopped.

I stood so fast my chair fell over.

“No.”

Roman looked at me.

Owen continued.

“Officially Daniel Hayes died in the Pier 9 fire.”

My hands began shaking.

“But I found hospital transport records under another name.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Roman stood beside me.

Owen gave the alias.

“David Hart.”

Then the screen went black.

I stared at it.

Fifteen years.

A funeral.

An empty coffin because the fire had supposedly destroyed the remains.

Fifteen years believing my father was dead.

I whispered, “Find him.”

Luca started typing.

Five minutes later, he stopped.

“There’s a David Hart in Vermont.”

My knees almost gave out.

Roman caught my arm.

May you like

Luca looked up.

“He’s alive.”
