Chapter 13 - WHAT I HAD ACTUALLY SAID

The messages arrived two days later through Javier’s lawyer.

Screenshots.

My name at the top.

My words beneath it.

Do whatever you need to get it started.

Another read:

I trust you. Stop asking me about every little thing.

I stared at them.

For one terrible second, even I doubted myself.

Then I remembered.

The first was about replacing the broken heating system at my mother’s house.

The second was about grocery shopping while I was finishing an urgent assignment.

“They cut the conversations,” I said.

Inés nodded.

“Can you retrieve the originals?”

I still had my old phone.

It was in a box at Elena’s apartment with a cracked screen and a battery that barely held a charge.

We plugged it in.

Nothing happened.

I sat on the floor beside the outlet.

Elena brought another cable.

Then another charger.

Finally, the screen lit up.

I laughed and cried at the same time.

We preserved the complete conversations.

Before my first message, Javier had sent a plumber’s estimate.

Before the second, he had asked whether he should buy chicken or fish.

There were dates, attachments, ordinary details.

A whole life surrounding the sentences they had stripped bare.

Inés submitted the complete exchanges and challenged the cropped versions.

“They counted on you not having these,” Elena said.

“No,” I answered. “They counted on me being too tired to look.”

That afternoon, the financing investigator confirmed that collection activity on the disputed account would remain paused during review.

It wasn’t victory.

But it meant I could open my email without expecting another payment demand.

Then Mercedes called from an unfamiliar number.

I recognized her first breath.

“Look what you’ve done.”

I put the call on speaker so Elena could hear my side.

“You need to speak with Inés.”

“You’ve turned my son against me.”

“He gave you my documents.”

“He wanted the money.”

I gripped the phone.

“What money?”

Mercedes laughed bitterly.

“You still think I kept all of it?”

I said nothing.

“There was a transfer to his personal account. Ask him where it went.”

Then she hung up.

I looked across the kitchen at Elena.

May you like

The loan had never been only about Mercedes’s business.

Javier had been protecting something of his own.
