Chapter 8 - Ethan’s Final Bargain

Nora stared at Ethan.
“You’re doing this again?”
His face was pale.
“I need everyone to stay back.”
Vivian began laughing.
“My loyal son.”
“I’m not loyal to you.”
“Then why are you holding the only evidence that can convict us?”
Ethan looked at Nora.
“Because the files implicate me too.”
The room went quiet.
Nora felt no surprise this time.
Only exhaustion.
“What did you do?”
Ethan swallowed.
“I signed the request allowing Dr. Carlisle to access your psychiatric history.”
“I don’t have a psychiatric history.”
“I know.”
“You helped them invent one.”
“Yes.”
Celeste stared at him with disgust.
Ethan continued.
“I also signed the preliminary guardianship petition. It would have transferred your financial authority to me after you were declared incompetent.”
Nora’s voice became dangerously calm.
“And after the baby was born?”
“I would have controlled the trust.”
“For how long?”
He said nothing.
“For how long, Ethan?”
“Indefinitely.”
Nora nodded slowly.
At least the truth was finally complete.
“Why did you turn against them?”
“Because I found your father’s video.”
“That isn’t the whole reason.”
“No.”
Ethan looked at Vivian.
“I discovered she planned to have Nora committed permanently.”
Nora’s blood ran cold.
Vivian showed no shame.
“She would have received excellent care.”
“And me?” Ethan asked.
Vivian tilted her head.
“You were useful until the documents were signed.”
Ethan laughed bitterly.
“You planned to frame me for her breakdown.”
“A husband driven to desperation by an unstable wife. Very believable.”
Nora looked at Ethan.
“So you didn’t save me because you loved me.”
His eyes returned to hers.
“At first, I saved myself.”
“Thank you for finally being honest.”
“But then I kept reading.”
His voice cracked.
“I saw what they did to your father. To the trial patients. To Grant’s son. I realized there was no version of this where I could pretend I was only following orders.”
“You still let them attack me tonight.”
“I needed the security footage to expose them publicly.”
Nora stared at him in disbelief.
“You sacrificed me for evidence.”
“I thought they would only search your purse.”
“They tore my dress.”
“I didn’t know they would—”
“You stood there.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Nora stepped closer to the broken window.
“I will never forget that.”
“I know.”
“And I may never forgive it.”
“I know.”
“Then give me the drive.”
His fingers tightened around it.
“If I do, I go to prison.”
“Probably.”
“Our child will grow up knowing what I did.”
“Yes.”
Ethan looked destroyed.
Nora did not soften.
“You had hundreds of chances to stop this before tonight.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
She reached out.
“The difference is that you used your fear to hurt someone weaker than you.”
For several seconds, Ethan did not move.
Then he placed the flash drive in her hand.
Police sirens echoed below.
Vivian stepped backward.
“This family survived wars, recessions, investigations—”
Nora faced her.
“This family survived because everyone around you stayed silent.”
The conference room doors burst open.
Federal agents entered with weapons drawn.
At their front was a gray-haired woman carrying a leather folder.
Nora recognized her immediately.
Evelyn Price.
Her father’s attorney.
She looked at Vivian.
“Samuel Hale left very clear instructions.”
Vivian’s face finally lost its confidence.
Evelyn turned toward Nora.
“Your father suspected they would move against you during the final month of your pregnancy.”
Nora stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I knew enough to prepare.”
“Why didn’t you warn me?”
“Because your father believed someone inside your marriage was leaking information.”
Her eyes moved to Ethan.
“He was right.”
Ethan lowered his head.
Evelyn opened the leather folder.
“But there is something none of you know.”
She removed a sealed DNA report.
“Nora’s unborn child is not the only beneficiary of the Hale trust.”
Nora frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Evelyn looked directly at Maya.
May you like
“Samuel Hale had another daughter.”
