Chapter 1: The Woman Who Refused To Fall

The ambulance arrived fifteen minutes later.

But for Caroline Whitmore, those fifteen minutes felt like an entire lifetime.

She remembered every second.

The cold marble beneath her.

The silence of the people watching.

The way her husband had taken one step toward her
then stopped because another woman looked at him.

That was the moment something inside Caroline broke.

Not because Vivienne had hurt her.

Not even because Vivienne had endangered her unborn child.

It was because Nathan had allowed it.

The paramedics carefully lifted Caroline onto the stretcher while Nathan followed behind, his face pale and full of regret.

“Caroline, I’m sorry.”

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes remained fixed on the ceiling as they moved through the ballroom.

Around them, the guests whispered.

Some blamed Vivienne.

Some defended her.

But everyone agreed on one thing:

The Whitmore family’s perfect image had cracked.

At the hospital, Nathan sat outside the emergency room for nearly two hours.

His tuxedo was still spotless.

His hands were not.

They were shaking.

For the first time in years, Nathan Whitmore looked like a man who had lost control of his own life.

The doctor finally stepped out.

“Your wife and the baby are stable.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Relief washed over him.

“But the fall caused complications. She needs complete rest and no stress.”

Nathan nodded quickly.

“I understand.”

The doctor looked at him carefully.

“Do you?”

The question stayed with him.

Because he knew exactly what the doctor meant.

When Nathan entered the room, Caroline was awake.

She was staring out the window.

The city lights reflected against her face.

“Caro
”

She didn’t turn.

“How long were you going to stand there?”

Nathan stopped.

“What?”

“Before you helped me.”

Silence.

“I don’t know.”

Caroline slowly looked at him.

“That’s the problem.”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

“I was shocked.”

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

But stronger than before.

“You were afraid.”

Nathan didn’t deny it.

Because she was right.

He was afraid of Vivienne.

Afraid of losing his company.

Afraid of destroying the family name.

Afraid of everything except losing Caroline.

Until tonight.

The next morning, Nora Bell arrived at the hospital.

She carried the same black leather folder.

The one she had been holding during the fall.

Caroline immediately noticed.

“You knew.”

Nora froze.

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“I saw what happened.”

“No.”

Caroline looked at the folder.

“You knew before it happened.”

Nora sat down slowly.

Her hands trembled.

“Vivienne planned everything.”

Caroline felt her heart tighten.

“Why?”

Nora opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Financial records.

And photographs.

“She found out something about your baby.”

Caroline stared at her.

“What?”

May you like

Nora whispered:

“Your child is the only thing standing between Vivienne and control of the Whitmore empire.”
