Chapter 14 - WHAT THE PAPER COULDN'T SAY

Ortiz had come to Massachusetts to work with the local investigators. The gala was not her operation. Naomi learned later that she had been nearby interviewing foundation staff when the call came in.

In the ballroom, she took one look at Naomi's face and asked, “Can you step outside with me?”

Naomi nodded.

Local officers separated the witnesses. The photographer provided his recording. Vanessa began explaining before anyone asked, then stopped when Marcus told her to.

This time, nobody let him answer for everyone.

On the terrace, Naomi described the kick. Then she repeated Vanessa's words about frightening Helen into returning the files.

“Ethan and his mother heard it,” she said.

Ortiz wrote that down.

“Is that enough?”

“It's another piece. A significant one.”

Naomi looked through the glass at the people inside.

“I wanted her to say it in front of everyone. I thought that would make it feel finished.”

“Does it?”

“No.”

Ortiz closed her notebook.

“That doesn't mean it didn't matter.”

The first arrests connected to the financial case came the following week. The investigation into the Philadelphia attack took longer.

Investigators traced the money, recovered communications, and compared Cole's records with the originals held by his former employer. Men who had once shared attorneys began hiring separate ones.

Vanessa's publicist called the ballroom incident a misunderstanding.

The full recording made that difficult to sell.

The harder truth arrived quietly, in interview rooms and boxes of records. Helen had uncovered money diverted from the housing project. Victor had ordered the files recovered before she reached investigators. Marcus had arranged the payment and later helped build the false paperwork.

Vanessa had approved access to Helen's transport schedule and paid through her company. Cole had pushed the route change despite Daniel's written objection.

Different hands. Different choices. The same blocked exit.

Audrey gave a statement about the unauthorized loans and her refusal to hear Helen. She resigned from the foundation board.

Ethan sold family assets to begin replacing the missing funds. He moved the foundation's oversight outside the household.

Naomi testified through the hearings without looking at Vanessa for permission to speak.

Afterward, Mara waited on the courthouse steps with Daniel's wedding ring on a chain around her neck.

“They finally said his name right,” she told Naomi.

Naomi hugged her.

Months later, Ortiz called with news about the last pending plea.

“You need to sit down,” she said.
