Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN AT THE WRONG DOOR

The champagne glass shattered at Sophie Reed’s feet.

Then Madison Vale smiled.

Not an embarrassed smile.

A satisfied one.

“Oh my God,” Madison said, covering her mouth with perfectly manicured fingers. “I am so sorry. I thought you were staff.”

The ballroom went quiet for half a second.

Just long enough for Sophie to understand exactly what had happened.

The champagne had not slipped.

Madison had poured it down the front of Sophie’s plain black dress.

On purpose.

Around them, two hundred guests stood beneath crystal chandeliers inside the forty-second-floor ballroom of Sterling Crown Tower, one of the most expensive buildings in Manhattan.

Men in tuxedos.

Women in dresses that cost more than cars.

Investors.

Politicians.

CEOs.

People who had spent their entire lives learning how to recognize money from across a room.

And Sophie Reed looked like she had none.

Her dress was simple.

No diamonds.

No designer bag.

No bodyguards.

No assistant following behind her.

Madison’s silver dress sparkled under the lights as she leaned closer.

“The service entrance is downstairs,” she whispered.

Sophie looked at the champagne spreading across her dress.

Then at Madison.

“You did that intentionally.”

Madison’s smile widened.

“Prove it.”

A man beside her laughed.

Carter Blake.

Thirty-six. Handsome. Expensive haircut. Expensive watch. Expensive arrogance.

He wrapped an arm around Madison’s waist.

“Come on, babe,” Carter said. “Don’t waste the evening.”

Sophie recognized him immediately.

That made the situation much more interesting.

Carter did not recognize her.

That made it dangerous.

Madison glanced at Sophie’s shoes.

“You know what I hate?” she said loudly enough for the people nearby to hear. “When people sneak into places where they clearly don’t belong.”

A few guests looked away.

Nobody stepped in.

Sophie had seen that kind of cowardice before.

People rarely defended someone they thought had no power.

“What makes you think I don’t belong here?” Sophie asked.

Madison laughed.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

Madison gestured around the ballroom.

“Look around.”

“I have.”

“And then look at yourself.”

Carter chuckled.

“That should answer the question.”

Sophie folded her hands.

She felt anger rising inside her.

But anger was useful only if you controlled it.

Otherwise, it controlled you.

Madison leaned closer.

“Here’s some free advice. Rich people can tell.”

“Tell what?”

“When someone is pretending.”

Sophie almost smiled.

Behind Madison, the elevator doors opened.

A man in a dark blue suit rushed into the ballroom.

Daniel Mercer.

General manager of Sterling Crown Tower.

He moved quickly through the crowd.

Madison noticed him.

Her expression changed immediately.

“Daniel!” she called brightly. “Thank God. We have a problem.”

Daniel barely looked at her.

His eyes locked on Sophie.

His face went pale.

Then he hurried forward.

Carter straightened.

Madison smiled, clearly expecting Sophie to be thrown out.

Daniel stopped in front of Sophie.

“Ms. Reed.”

The room became strangely still.

Daniel looked genuinely horrified.

“We’ve been calling you.”

Sophie said nothing.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The entire board is upstairs.”

Madison’s smile disappeared.

Daniel continued.

“Everyone has been waiting for you.”

Carter’s arm slowly dropped from Madison’s waist.

Madison stared at Sophie.

“Waiting for… her?”

Daniel finally noticed the champagne soaking Sophie’s dress.

His eyes hardened.

“What happened?”

Madison opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Sophie looked directly at Carter.

Then Madison.

And for the first time that night, she smiled.

“That,” Sophie said quietly, “is something we’re going to discuss upstairs.”

Carter’s face lost all color.

Because suddenly he remembered where he had seen Sophie Reed before.

On a confidential ownership document.

Next to one terrifying sentence.

MAJORITY SHAREHOLDER — 61%.

And upstairs, the board was about to vote on Carter Blake’s future.
