Chapter 7 - ROSE’S LAST THREE DAYS

Helena didn’t sleep.

At sunrise, she sat on the floor of her mother’s old bedroom with boxes stacked around her.

After Rose died, Helena’s father had packed away almost everything.

“Why would he keep any evidence?” Anna asked.

“Because Dad never threw anything away.”

Daniel leaned against the door.

“Men like Richard don’t destroy history. They edit it.”

Helena hated that Daniel understood her father so well.

She opened another box.

Old bills.

Birthday cards.

Church programs.

Then she found her mother’s day planner from 2018.

Three days before her death, Rose had written only one line.

11:30 — E.

Helena’s fingers shook.

“Evelyn.”

Anna sat beside her.

Under the planner was a receipt.

Hartwell Bank.

Safe-deposit box renewal.

Daniel frowned.

“Your mother had a box?”

“Not that I knew about.”

They drove to the bank.

The manager refused access.

Helena produced Rose’s death certificate and estate documents.

An hour later, they were escorted into a private room.

Box 317 arrived.

Helena unlocked it.

Inside lay cash.

Jewelry.

A stack of letters tied with blue ribbon.

Anna gasped.

Every envelope was addressed to Rose Crawford.

Every one was from Evelyn.

Nineteen years of letters.

Dozens of them.

Some unopened.

Some marked RETURN TO SENDER.

Helena picked up the oldest.

Mom,

Dad said I can never come back.

He said Daniel will die in prison if I do.

He says Helena hates me now.

Please tell her I didn’t leave because of her.

Tell her I love her.

Helena pressed the letter to her mouth.

Her mother had never stopped waiting because she hadn’t known where Evelyn was.

Until 2018.

Anna opened another.

Mom,

Anna turned five today.

She looks like Daniel when she smiles.

I still haven’t told her he’s alive.

I know that’s wrong.

I’m scared Richard will find us.

Helena began crying.

Not quietly.

Nineteen years of grief broke loose at once.

Daniel stepped away, staring out the window.

Anna opened the final letter.

It was dated four days before Rose died.

Mom,

I found out Richard lied.

Daniel didn’t get probation.

He served eight years.

I destroyed an innocent man because I believed Dad.

I’m calling you Thursday.

No more secrets.

We bring Helena in.

We tell the truth.

Together.

Helena looked at the planner.

11:30 — E.

“They spoke.”

Anna nodded.

At the bottom of the safe-deposit box was a small cassette recorder.

Daniel pressed PLAY.

Rose’s voice filled the room.

Weak.

Shaking.

“Evelyn, if something happens to me, you need to know I believe you.”

Then Evelyn’s voice.

Older.

Crying.

“Mom, Bell was driving. Dad was with him.”

“I know.”

“How?”

A long pause.

Then Rose said something that made Helena’s skin crawl.

“Because your father confessed to me last night.”

Another male voice suddenly sounded in the background.

Richard Crawford.

“You shouldn’t be recording this, Rose.”

The tape went silent.

Helena stared at the recorder.

May you like

Her father had caught her mother.

And three days later, Rose Crawford was dead.
