Chapter 13 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

Nobody spoke while the footage played.

Claire opened Miguel’s locker.

She placed the cream envelope inside.

Then she closed the door.

Simple.

Calm.

No hesitation.

No panic.

This had not been a decision made in anger after water touched her dress.

She had planned it before the spill.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Go back.”

The security supervisor rewound.

2:23 p.m.

Claire entered.

Envelope in hand.

Daniel pointed.

“Where did she get it?”

They checked earlier cameras.

2:18.

Claire entered the administrative hallway.

2:20.

She left.

The envelope was visible under her robe.

Howard looked sick.

“That office has the gratuity safe.”

Daniel whispered, “Keep going.”

They checked the bridal suite camera outside the door.

2:21.

Patricia met Claire.

They spoke for forty seconds.

No audio.

Patricia handed Claire something.

A key.

Emily sat down.

“My God.”

Daniel felt numb.

The evidence was clean.

Claire stole the envelope.

Claire placed it in Miguel’s locker.

Patricia helped.

But why Miguel?

The supervisor pulled another angle.

2:31.

Claire stood near the ballroom entrance watching the service staff.

Miguel passed.

She stopped him.

Spoke.

Handed him the marked fifty.

Then walked away.

Daniel’s stomach twisted.

She had marked him.

Selected him.

Prepared him.

All before the accident.

The spilled water had simply given her the perfect public excuse.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“Why him?”

Howard frowned.

“What?”

“Why Miguel?”

The banquet manager looked uncomfortable.

Daniel noticed.

“You know something.”

“No.”

“Howard.”

He sighed.

“Miguel complained this morning.”

“About what?”

“One of the bridesmaids.”

Emily looked up.

“Who?”

“Not a bridesmaid. Sorry. Ms. Whitmore.”

Daniel stared.

“What did Claire do?”

Howard rubbed his neck.

“She made a comment.”

“What comment?”

“Miguel was setting up breakfast in the bridal suite. She asked where he was from.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Howard continued.

“He said New Jersey.”

Ryan almost laughed.

Howard looked embarrassed.

“She asked where he was really from.”

Emily whispered, “Oh no.”

“Miguel said his parents are from El Salvador.”

Daniel knew what was coming.

Howard looked down.

“She asked whether he was legal.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“What did Miguel say?”

“He told her the question was inappropriate.”

“And?”

“She told him not to get an attitude.”

Daniel felt fury rise.

“What did he do?”

“He reported it.”

“To you?”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I apologized and reassigned him.”

“Then why was he serving Claire later?”

Howard looked confused.

“I didn’t assign him.”

Daniel stared.

“Who did?”

They checked the service board.

Miguel’s original section had been changed.

In handwriting.

Assigned to head table.

The initials beside the change:

C.W.

Claire Whitmore.

Emily whispered, “She wanted him near her.”

Daniel nodded.

It had never been about the water.

The water was chance.

The target wasn’t.

Claire had decided that morning to punish a waiter because he refused to let her humiliate him.

She had stolen cash.

Marked a bill.

Planted evidence.

Changed his assignment.

Then slapped him when an accident handed her an opportunity.

Daniel walked away from the security office.

Ryan followed.

“Where are you going?”

“To find Miguel.”

He was in the employee dining room with a police officer.

Daniel stopped at the door.

Miguel looked up.

Daniel suddenly didn’t know what to say.

Sorry sounded too small.

Miguel stood.

“Mr. Carter.”

Daniel walked over.

“They found the footage.”

Miguel watched his face.

“She planted it?”

“Yes.”

Miguel nodded slowly.

No relief.

Just tired understanding.

Daniel said, “You’re cleared.”

Miguel looked down.

Then he laughed once.

Softly.

“You know the messed-up part?”

“What?”

“I knew she hated me this morning.”

Daniel frowned.

Miguel continued.

“But when she gave me that fifty, I thought maybe I was wrong about her.”

He looked Daniel in the eyes.

“I thought maybe she was trying to be nice.”

Daniel had no answer.

Miguel picked up his jacket.

As he walked away, he stopped beside Daniel.

“One question.”

“Yeah?”

“Did you really call off the wedding?”

Daniel nodded.

Miguel studied him.

Then said:

“Good.”

He walked away.

Daniel stood there for a long moment.

His phone buzzed.

A news alert.
