Chapter 2 — The Pearls Were Never Hers

The words hit the ballroom harder than the shattered crystal.
"She did the exact same thing to my mother."
No one breathed.
The two security guards stopped only inches from the little girl, glancing uncertainly toward Arthur Vance. One command from him, and the child would disappear forever.
Arthur slowly raised his hand.
"Don't touch her."
The guards froze.
Eleanor spun toward him.
"Arthur, she's obviously disturbed!"
But Arthur wasn't looking at his wife anymore.
He was staring at the girl's face.
Something about her eyes...
Not fear.
Recognition.
"What's your name?" Arthur asked quietly.
The girl swallowed.
"Lily."
"And your mother's name?"
For the first time, uncertainty crossed the child's face.
"Emma Carter."
Arthur frowned.
The name stirred something buried deep in his memory.
Before he could speak again, Eleanor cut in.
"Arthur, enough. She's making up stories for money. Throw her out."
Lily's head snapped toward Eleanor.
"My mom never wanted your money."
The room grew even quieter.
"She wanted you to stop stealing her life."
Gasps rippled through the audience.
Eleanor laughed nervously.
"What nonsense."
Lily reached into her oversized denim jacket.
The security guards instantly tensed.
Instead of a weapon...
She pulled out a small worn envelope.
Its edges were yellow with age.
"My mom told me to give this to Mr. Vance if anything ever happened to her."
Arthur carefully accepted it.
Written across the front in faded blue ink were six words.
For Arthur. Only if I'm gone.
His heart skipped.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
Twenty years ago...
Emma Carter had been the museum's youngest art conservator.
And the woman he had once planned to marry.
Arthur slowly opened the envelope.
The first photograph slid onto the table.
Emma.
Smiling.
Standing beside Arthur.
And around her neck...
The exact same South Sea pearl necklace Eleanor was wearing tonight.
Arthur's face drained of color.
He slowly looked up at his wife.
"Eleanor..."
"Where did you get those pearls?"
Eleanor didn't answer.
May you like
For the first time in years...
She looked afraid.
