Chapter 14 - NORA’S LAST COPY

Ruiz heard the voice. She signaled for me to keep talking.

“Vale?”

“Bring me what she left you,” he said. “I’ll tell you what happened on the road.”

“Where are you?”

“You know I can’t answer that.”

“Then I don’t know why I should believe you.”

A pause. “Ask Diane why she called me that night.”

He ended the call.

Ruiz sent a team to the locker. It was at a train station forty minutes away. Inside was a sealed envelope holding a small drive and a letter for me.

I read Nora’s letter first.

“Ethan, I planned to tell you all of this when I came home. I was afraid Diane would reach the evidence before we could protect Ava. I’m sorry I carried it alone. Please make sure the girls are heard, even if the adults around them would rather explain everything away.”

I folded the page and held it while Ruiz opened the drive.

Nora had saved a copy of Vale’s calls with Diane. On the night of her death, Diane told him Nora was driving to the Miller house. Vale said he would follow her and get the camera back. Diane told him to leave Nora alone and call her instead.

Then came a later call. Vale was breathing hard.

“She went off the road,” he said. “I was behind her. She saw me and took the curve too fast.”

“Did you stop?” Diane asked.

No answer.

“Martin. Did you call for help?”

The recording ended.

For a moment I could hear only the hum of Ruiz’s laptop. We still needed the road evidence and Vale’s account. The call did not tell us exactly why Nora lost control. It told us that Vale had been there and had kept it secret.

Ruiz’s team traced Vale to a rental cabin. Officers found him packing a bag. He ran out the back and was caught before he reached the road.

At the station, he asked for an attorney. Diane’s attorney arrived soon after.

I didn’t watch either interview. I went to Emma.

She was asleep on the couch, one arm curled around Bunny. Caleb had left a lamp on beside her. I sat down and stayed until she woke.

“Did you find Ava?” she asked.

“We did.”

“Is her dad nice?”

“He waited for her. She went to him when she was ready.”

Emma thought about that. Then she touched the heart patch on her rabbit.

“Did Mommy help?”

“Yes,” I said. “She helped both of you.”

A week later, Ruiz called. Investigators had completed another review of Nora’s crash. Vale’s vehicle had followed hers closely around the last curve. Marks on the road showed Nora had braked before losing control.

Vale had left without calling for help.

I stood at the kitchen window as Ruiz told me. Emma was in the yard with Caleb, laughing while Bunny rode in the basket of her little bike.

Ruiz added that Ava wanted to visit.

“She asked if Emma still has the rabbit,” Ruiz said.
