Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO CAME THROUGH THE GATE

The SUV stopped twenty feet from the front steps.

Security surrounded it before the driver opened the door.

Victor Hale stepped out with both hands visible.

He looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.

That was the first disturbing thing about him.

He looked ordinary.

Thirty-eight.

Trim.

Clean haircut.

Navy jacket.

The kind of man who could stand beside you in an airport line without ever being remembered.

“Stay inside.”

Marcus’s voice came through the intercom.

Julian ignored him.

I grabbed my son’s arm.

“No.”

“He came here because of me.”

“He came here because he wants control of what happens next.”

Julian looked at me.

“So we hide?”

“We choose the room.”

That stopped him.

Victor had already forced his way through our gate.

I would not also let him choose the terms of the confrontation.

Police were called.

Before they arrived, Victor asked to speak with Chloe.

Chloe went white.

“No.”

Julian looked at her.

“Afraid of your husband?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Victor remained outside.

Security searched him.

No weapon.

No obvious device.

He kept repeating the same sentence.

“I have information about Bernard Shaw.”

When police arrived, they detained him for the gate damage.

Then something unexpected happened.

Victor asked for an attorney.

Not for himself.

For Chloe.

“She is in danger.”

The officer looked at him.

“From whom?”

“Bernard.”

“What kind of danger?”

Victor glanced toward the house.

“The kind Ethan Cross didn’t survive.”

Natalie’s brother.

My blood went cold.

Police brought Victor into a secured interview room inside the gatehouse.

Chloe refused to see him.

I did.

Julian came with me.

Margaret joined by video call.

Victor sat with one wrist cuffed to the table.

His eyes went directly to Julian.

“You look like your father.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Everybody suddenly has an opinion about my father.”

Victor almost smiled.

“I never met him.”

“Then don’t talk about him.”

Victor looked at me.

“Chloe told you about the backup.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I helped create it.”

“Where is it?”

He ignored the question.

“You need to understand Bernard.”

“I understand enough.”

“No.”

“You understand fraud.”

“You don’t understand motive.”

I sat across from him.

“Then explain.”

Victor looked toward the police officer.

“I want protection.”

“From Bernard?”

“Yes.”

I almost laughed.

“You rammed my gate to ask for protection?”

“He tried to kill Chloe yesterday.”

“Can you prove that?”

“I can prove he burned the apartment.”

“The camera already did that.”

Victor’s expression changed slightly.

He had not known we had the image.

Good.

“What else?”

I asked.

He looked at Julian.

“Bernard’s amendment is fake.”

Margaret spoke from the screen.

“How do you know?”

“Because he paid me to make it.”

Silence.

Julian leaned forward.

“You forged my father’s signature?”

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.”

Julian stood so fast the chair struck the wall.

I stepped between them.

“Sit down.”

Victor remained calm.

“It wasn’t supposed to be used in court.”

“What was it supposed to do?”

“Pressure you.”

“How?”

Victor looked at me.

“The plan was simple.”

“Chloe marries Julian.”

“Bernard reveals the amendment after the wedding.”

“He claims it is authentic.”

“He tells Julian that fighting it will create years of litigation.”

“Chloe convinces Julian to settle by moving a portion of assets into a jointly controlled investment company.”

“Victor’s company?”

“One of them.”

“And then?”

“We transfer the money.”

“Where?”

“Multiple accounts.”

“Offshore?”

“Yes.”

Julian stared at him.

“You’re confessing.”

Victor shrugged.

“I’m negotiating.”

“With whose money?”

“With information.”

I felt disgust.

“What happened to Ethan Cross?”

Victor’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked away.

“Bernard happened.”

“Explain.”

“Ethan found our files.”

“Rebecca—Chloe—wanted to leave.”

Chloe’s old name.

Victor continued.

“I told Bernard Ethan knew too much.”

“What did Bernard do?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s convenient.”

“I swear.”

“You expect me to believe you ran financial fraud with him but never asked why your target died?”

Victor looked at me.

“I knew better than to ask.”

Julian’s voice was quiet.

“Were you sleeping with Chloe while she was with Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“And while she was with me?”

Victor hesitated.

My son saw the answer.

“When?”

Victor looked down.

“Twice.”

Julian’s face became empty.

I wanted to stop the conversation.

He needed the truth more than protection.

“When?”

“The first time was before your engagement.”

“The second?”

Victor looked at him.

“Six weeks ago.”

Julian stepped backward.

The pregnancy.

Everyone thought of it.

Victor did too.

“I don’t know whose baby it is.”

Julian left the room.

I let him.

Some pain needs privacy.

I turned back to Victor.

“Where is the backup?”

He smiled faintly.

“Protection first.”

I stood.

“No.”

“Then Bernard wins.”

“You misunderstand me.”

I leaned closer.

“You came through my gate because Bernard frightened you.”

“You need us more than we need you.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“You need that backup.”

“Yes.”

“But you need a place to sleep tonight without wondering whether Bernard will burn it down around you.”

Victor stared at me.

I continued.

“You give law enforcement everything.”

“Every account.”

“Every message.”

“Every target.”

“Every document.”

“And then your attorney negotiates.”

“That is the only deal you are getting from me.”

Victor laughed softly.

“Chloe was right about you.”

“What did she say?”

“That you’re colder than Julian realizes.”

I smiled.

“Chloe confused boundaries with coldness.”

Victor’s expression changed.

The officer ended the interview.

Outside, I found Julian alone near the garden wall.

He did not look at me.

“Six weeks ago.”

I stood beside him.

“Yes.”

“She came home that night.”

He swallowed.

“She kissed me.”

I said nothing.

“She asked me whether I wanted children.”

His voice broke.

I wanted to hate Chloe for every second of this.

But hatred would not heal my son.

He looked at me.

“If the baby is Victor’s, I walk away.”

“Yes.”

“If the baby is mine…”

“You become a father.”

“And Chloe?”

“You become a father.”

“That is the answer.”

He nodded slowly.

Police took Victor away.

Before the car left, he requested one more minute.

He looked at me through the open window.

“Check Elena’s room.”

My expression changed.

“Why?”

“Because Chloe hid something there.”

“What?”

Victor smiled without humor.

“Something that will make the police stop believing your housekeeper.”

The vehicle pulled away.

We drove back toward the mansion.

Elena was still staying at the hotel.

Marcus opened her staff suite with two police officers present.

We searched carefully.

Nothing unusual at first.

Then an officer opened the ventilation grille behind the dresser.

Inside was a velvet bag.

He removed it.

My stomach dropped.

It contained jewelry.

My jewelry.

A diamond bracelet I had not realized was missing.

Two rings from my private safe.

And fifteen thousand dollars in cash.

Elena’s fingerprints would certainly be all over the room.

Chloe had already accused her of assault.

Now stolen property had appeared in her quarters.

Julian stared at the bag.

“She framed Elena.”

I nodded.

Then Marcus looked inside the ventilation opening again.

“There’s something else.”

He reached deeper.

His hand came out holding a small bottle.

Prescription sedatives.

The label had been removed.

Daniel took one look and turned pale.

“What?”

I asked.

He looked toward Julian.

“These are the same class of medication found in Ethan Cross’s toxicology report.”

The room became silent.

Then Julian’s phone rang.

It was Chloe.

He answered on speaker.

Her voice came in a whisper.

“Julian, you need to leave the house.”

His expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Victor wasn’t the only person who planted things there.”

My blood turned cold.

“Who else?”

I asked.

Chloe heard me.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

May you like

“Bernard has someone on your staff.”

The line disconnected.
