Chapter 1: The Woman Everyone Trusted

I spent three days in the hospital trying to understand one thing.

Why?

Why would the woman who brought me soup when I was sick…
the woman who held my hand during my darkest days…
the woman my own son believed was the kindest person he had ever met…

try to kill me?

The doctors called it a miracle that I survived.

Multiple fractures. A broken shoulder. Two cracked ribs.

They said a woman my age should not have lived through a fall like that.

But I knew something they didn’t.

I didn’t survive because I was lucky.

I survived because someone had made one mistake.

Brittany thought I was helpless.

She thought a wheelchair meant weakness.

She thought my age meant my mind was fading.

She was wrong.

The moment I opened my eyes in that hospital room, I remembered everything.

The whisper.

The push.

The smile.

And most importantly…

The way she changed the second Jason walked through the door.

My son sat beside my bed every day.

His face looked exhausted.

Guilty.

Confused.

“Mom…” he said quietly one evening. “Why would Brittany do something like that?”

I looked at him.

That was the hardest question anyone had asked me.

Because the truth was terrifying.

Brittany wasn’t a stranger.

She knew exactly how to become part of our family.

She studied us.

She learned what we wanted to see.

When I first met her, she arrived at my house carrying homemade cookies.

“I heard you love chocolate chip,” she said with a warm smile.

She remembered my favorite flowers.

She knew my medication schedule.

She called me “Mom” before Jason even proposed.

Everyone loved her.

Even me.

That was the part that hurt the most.

I had defended her.

I had told Jason, “You found a good woman.”

I had no idea I was inviting danger into my home.

“I don’t know why,” I finally told Jason.

But I did know one thing.

“She is lying.”

Jason looked away.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

The doubt.

Brittany had already planted it.

Later that night, I woke up to voices outside my hospital room.

Jason and Brittany.

“You have to understand,” Brittany whispered. “Your mother is confused because of the trauma.”

My heart stopped.

“She thinks I pushed her because she was scared.”

Jason was silent.

Then Brittany continued.

“She’s always been afraid of losing control. Maybe she needs help.”

Help.

That word almost made me laugh.

Because Brittany wasn’t trying to help me.

She was trying to erase me.

Then I heard Jason say something that broke my heart.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.”

I closed my eyes.

Not because I was tired.

Because I realized something.

Brittany wasn’t just trying to hurt me physically.

May you like

She was trying to take away the one person who could expose her.

My son.
