Chapter 14 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER HAPPENED

One year after the wedding that never happened, the Valderrama estate looked different.
The expensive wedding decorations were gone.
The glass room where Mateo had been trapped had been converted into an art studio.
At Mateo’s request, the lock had been removed entirely.
Elena lived in a cottage nearby.
Rosa had retired.
Isabella sold several of the family’s luxury properties.
Part of the money created a foundation for children who had disappeared through illegal custody schemes and trafficking networks.
Mateo remained the beneficiary of the Laurent trust.
Elena remained trustee.
Adrian became his legal guardian with Elena’s consent.
Isabella did not fight for custody.
That surprised everyone.
Especially Mateo.
One afternoon, he asked her why.
They sat beneath the same olive tree where he had once asked Adrian who he really was.
“Because loving you doesn’t mean owning you.”
Mateo looked at her.
“You could have gone to court.”
“Yes.”
“You’re my real mother.”
“Biological mother.”
“What’s the difference?”
Isabella smiled sadly.
“A mother is something you earn every day.”
“I missed too many days.”
Mateo looked down.
“Do you want me to forgive you?”
“Yes.”
She answered without hesitation.
“But I don’t want you to do it because I want it.”
He considered that.
“I’m still mad.”
“You should be.”
“Sometimes I hate you.”
“I understand.”
“Sometimes I don’t.”
Isabella nodded.
“That’s okay too.”
Mateo looked toward the mansion.
“Uncle Adrian says Dad used to climb that wall.”
Isabella laughed.
“He did.”
“He said Dad was terrible at it.”
“He was.”
“Tell me about him.”
So she did.
She told Mateo about Thomas.
Not the dead man from newspaper stories.
The real Thomas.
The terrible dancer.
The obsessive coffee drinker.
The man who sang badly in the car.
The man who cried when Gabriel was born.
Mateo listened for nearly an hour.
Then he pulled the silver bracelet from his pocket.
He rarely wore it anymore.
“Did Dad give me this?”
“Yes.”
Mateo turned it over.
G.L.M.
“Can we change it?”
Isabella looked surprised.
“To what?”
Mateo smiled.
“M.G.W.”
Mateo Gabriel Whitmore.
Isabella began crying.
“Would that be okay?”
“It would be perfect.”
Mateo looked uncomfortable.
“Don’t cry.”
She laughed through her tears.
“Sorry.”
He stood.
Then hesitated.
“Isabella?”
“Yes?”
“Maybe someday I’ll call you Mom.”
Her face crumpled.
“But not yet.”
She nodded.
“Not until you want to.”
He ran toward Adrian.
Isabella remained beneath the olive tree.
For years, she had believed redemption meant being forgiven.

Now she understood.
Redemption meant changing even when forgiveness was never guaranteed.
