Chapter 12 - THE PARTY

Maya had no reason to attend the rooftop party as an intern. Her badge was disabled, and Whitmore had already put her on leave.
Then Richard’s office sent an invitation.
Evelyn advised Maya that she did not have to go. Maya understood. Tessa’s documents, Samuel’s agreement, and Eli’s report would stand or fall on their own. Showing up could give Claire another chance to make a scene.
Maya went anyway.
“I want Richard to look at me when the committee calls,” she told Evelyn.
Evelyn studied her for a moment. “Then I’ll be downstairs. Keep your phone on.”
The rooftop glowed above the Chicago River. Servers moved between investors and executives. Glass doors stood open to a ballroom filled with flowers and large screens showing Whitmore and Northline’s logos side by side.
Maya wore a navy blazer she had bought for her first job interview. She had barely reached the drinks table when Claire stepped into her path.
“I heard security took your badge,” Claire said.
“They did.”
“And yet here you are.”
“Your father invited me.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed. “He feels guilty. He’ll get over it.”
Maya tried to move around her. Claire shifted with her.
“What did you tell him?” Claire asked.
“Ask him.”
“I did. He won’t talk to me.”
“That sounds frustrating.”
Claire’s smile vanished. “You came here to enjoy this.”
“I came because I was invited.”
Across the roof, Richard was speaking with Northline’s chair. Martin stood close beside them, his jaw set. When Martin noticed Maya, he reached into his pocket and took out his phone.
Maya’s own phone buzzed.
Eli: I HAVE THE MATCH. SAME ACCOUNT RECEIVED THE REED ROYALTIES AND PAID LAKESHORE. SENDING VERIFIED RECORDS TO COUNSEL NOW.
Maya read the message twice.
The last piece was in place.
She started toward the quieter side of the roof to call Evelyn. Claire stepped in front of her again, blocking the narrow path beside the pool.
“You’re done making my family look bad,” Claire said.
“Move.”
Claire glanced at the guests watching them. “Make me.”
May you like
Maya took one step to pass.
Claire’s foot slid into her path.
