Chapter 10 - THE LAST VISIT

My grandmother spent her final weeks in a small room at the clinic’s recovery wing. I remembered the chair beside her bed, the window that wouldn’t open, and the nurse who brought me tea when I stayed late.
I didn’t remember a camera.
Park obtained the wing’s installation records. The cameras had been approved by Dr. Vale after several patient complaints about missing belongings. But one camera faced my grandmother’s room from across the hall, and its storage account had been paid by Harbor Bridge.
“We need the footage,” Park said. “If it still exists.”
The security supervisor receiving monthly payments was named Calvin Price. Park found him at a warehouse in Queens. He agreed to talk after seeing Marco’s statement. Price said Vale had asked him to keep copies of hallway footage and delete certain nights from the clinic’s system.
“Why?” Park asked.
“She said a donor was visiting a patient and wanted privacy.”
The donor was Dominic Bellini.
Price had kept his own backup after Vale stopped paying him. Park took possession of it. I waited in another room while she reviewed the files. I thought I wanted to see everything. Then I pictured my grandmother weak in her bed and wasn’t sure.
Park called me in for one short clip.
Rosa stood at her doorway, steadier than she’d seemed that week. Bellini approached carrying a folder. Their voices came through the hallway microphone in fragments.
“...patients know,” Rosa said.
Bellini replied, “You have no idea whose money that is.”
“I know where it came from.”
Vale appeared and guided Rosa back inside. The clip ended when Price’s camera panned away.
It proved Rosa had confronted Bellini. It did not tell us what happened afterward.
Antonio watched the clip with Park’s permission because his mother’s money was part of the investigation. When it ended, he gripped the edge of the table.
“I brought Bellini to that clinic,” he said. “He told me he wanted to fund patient care.”
“You didn’t see the bills,” I said.
“I had a reason to check them. Rosa tried to warn me.”
His phone rang. He let it ring, then showed Park the screen.
Dominic Bellini.

Park told him to answer on speaker.
Bellini’s voice came through smooth and friendly. “Antonio. We need to discuss Sophie before she causes your mother any more trouble.”
