Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden for Twenty Years

The woman stepped forward slowly.
She introduced herself as Margaret Hale.
For over thirty years, she had worked as a pediatric physical therapist before retiring.
When she saw the letter, her hands began to shake.
"My younger sister, Grace... she wrote exactly like this."
She looked at Eli.
"Your mother... what was her name?"
"Grace."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"Oh, my God."
The ballroom filled with murmurs.
"My sister disappeared twenty years ago."
She looked at Emma.
"She believed children sometimes gave up walking because everyone around them unknowingly taught them to fear falling more than they desired standing."
The doctors exchanged uncertain glances.
Margaret continued.
"Grace never claimed to perform miracles."
"She simply believed that some children didn't need stronger muscles."
"They needed someone who believed they could stand before they believed it themselves."
Emma's father looked down at his daughter.
For years...
Every therapy session had begun with warnings.
"Be careful."
"Don't fall."
"Sit down."
"You'll hurt yourself."
Today...
The first words Eli had spoken were different.
"Do you want to try?"
No pressure.
No command.
Just permission.
Emma smiled through fresh tears.
"I wasn't afraid when he held my hand."
The neurologist quietly lowered his head.
"We may have spent years treating her body..."
"...while forgetting her courage."
The room fell silent once again.
But Eli had already turned toward the ballroom doors.
His part was finished.
Or so he thought.
"Wait."
Emma called after him.
He stopped.

She smiled.
"I want to take my second step."
