SHE HAD THE LIE READY / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - THE PART HE COULDN’T DENY

Marcus recognized the sentence.

That was the worst part.

He had written it.

Khloe watched him read.

“Is it real?”

“Yes.”

Rachel stood up.

Marcus lifted a hand.

“Please. Let me explain the whole email.”

“You have about ten seconds,” she said.

He turned the page.

The printed copy began halfway through a thread.

Three months earlier, a gossip site had tried to obtain details of Khloe’s prenatal appointments through a freelance photographer.

Marcus had forwarded the warning to Adrian, who oversaw security spending at the time.

Do whatever it takes to keep Khloe out of this.

He had meant the publicity.

Adrian’s submitted copy removed the earlier messages.

Their attorney would obtain the complete thread from the archived server records, rather than rely on Marcus’s explanation.

Khloe listened.

Then she said, “You still wrote it.”

“Yes.”

“You talk like that all the time.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Handle it. Make it disappear. Do whatever it takes.”

She wasn’t accusing him of ordering an attack.

She was describing the world he had built.

A place where important men gave vague instructions and trusted ambitious people to keep unpleasant details away from them.

“I did,” he said.

“And when I became an unpleasant detail?”

He had no answer that could repair what she meant.

Weeks passed.

Noah grew stronger.

Khloe recovered at Rachel’s apartment and spent her days at the hospital.

Marcus came when invited, learned the feeding schedule, and stopped treating fatherhood like something he could delegate while he solved larger problems.

The complete email thread supported his account.

Device records contradicted several messages attributed to Khloe.

The contractor identified the instructions she had received.

Financial records tied payments to the campaign against Khloe, while Elaine’s messages established how Isabella had arranged the camera blackout.

There was no miraculous recording of the assault.

There was Khloe’s testimony.

The medical evidence.

The witnesses to its immediate aftermath.

And the lies that kept falling apart when placed beside the records.

On the morning Noah was finally cleared to go home, Khloe found an envelope waiting through her attorney.

A settlement proposal from Isabella’s counsel.

Money.

Confidentiality.

A promise to stop contesting certain civil claims.

Khloe read the last page.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“What do you think?”

He glanced at their son sleeping in his carrier.

For once, he didn’t reach for the document.

“I think it’s your decision.”

Khloe picked up a pen.

Across the signature line, she wrote one word.

No.
