Chapter 10 - The Ambush at Arraignment

The fluorescent lighting inside Department 4 of the County Superior Courthouse was merciless.

At 8:30 AM, Tanya Vaughn sat at the defense table, wearing a borrowed grey blazer over her rumpled sweater. Her makeup was gone, her hair was pulled back in a hasty knot, and her high-powered defense attorney, Bradley Vance, sat beside her, whispering furiously into her ear.

Tanya looked smug. She knew her firm had posted her ten-thousand-dollar bail within an hour of the magistrate setting it. She believed she held all the leverage: the money was gone, the documents were burned, and Andre was left holding an empty bag.

The wooden double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Andre walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, his posture straight, his face an unreadable mask of stone. Beside him walked Marcus Cole—six-foot-three, immaculate three-piece pinstripe suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase that looked like it had been through a dozen corporate wars.

Tanya turned her head, offering Andre a venomous, triumphant smirk. You lose, her eyes said.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Sterling," the bailiff announced.

Judge Sterling, a sharp-featured woman in her sixties with a reputation for zero tolerance for domestic games, took the bench and adjusted her reading glasses. "Case number 24-CR-8891, State versus Tanya Vaughn. Arraignment on charges of felony arson, destruction of evidence, and domestic endangerment."

Tanya’s lawyer stood up immediately. "Your Honor, my client enters a plea of not guilty. This is a private marital dispute that got out of hand. The property burned was co-mingled household scrap, and Mr. Carter is using the criminal justice system to gain leverage in a pending family law matter. We ask for all charges to be dismissed or reduced to a summary misdemeanor."

Judge Sterling looked over her glasses at the defense. "Mr. Cole, I see you are listed as special counsel for the complainant?"

Marcus Cole stood up, buttoning his jacket with smooth, effortless precision.

"Thank you, Your Honor. While my colleague paints this as a domestic quarrel over 'household scrap,' we are submitting Exhibit A: digital forensics recovered from the defendant’s cloud backups and banking transactions initiated at 2:14 PM yesterday."

Tanya’s smirk vanished. Her lawyer froze.

"What is the nature of these documents, Mr. Cole?" Judge Sterling asked.

"Yesterday afternoon, thirty minutes before attempting to destroy Mr. Carter’s paper archives by fire, the defendant embezzled one hundred and forty thousand dollars from Carter Build Group LLC into an offshore shell corporation," Marcus said, his voice echoing with absolute clarity through the courtroom. "Furthermore, we have hard evidence showing she altered federal payroll records, committed bank fraud via unauthorized digital signatures, and booked a one-way transfer of those assets to a non-extradition jurisdiction."

"Objection!" Vance yelled, jumping to his feet. "This is completely outside the scope of an arraignment hearing!"

"It goes directly to flight risk and criminal intent, Your Honor," Marcus fired back, stepping forward to hand a thick bound folder to the bailiff. "The defendant didn't just burn papers; she attempted to destroy the paper trail of a major federal financial crime."

Judge Sterling flipped through the first three pages of Marcus’s filing. Her eyebrows rose steadily higher. When she looked up, her gaze was fixed directly on Tanya Vaughn.

"Bail is revoked," Judge Sterling said, the sound of her gavel cracking through the room like thunder. "The defendant will be remanded into custody pending a full federal financial review."

Tanya let out a choked gasp, grabbing her lawyer’s sleeve. "What?! No! Brad, do something!"

Two bailiffs stepped behind her chair, taking her arms.

As they pulled her toward the side holding cell, Tanya locked eyes with Andre. For the first time, there was no arrogance left in her face. There was only pure, unadulterated terror.
