Chapter 1 - THE BOY ON THE FLOOR

The first thing I saw when I walked into my house was my four-year-old son crawling across the marble floor.

Not playing.

Not pretending to be a dinosaur.

Crawling because someone had ordered him to.

“Mommy…”

Ethan’s voice was barely a whisper.

My suitcase slipped from my hand.

He was still wearing the green dinosaur pajamas I had packed for him before leaving on my business trip two nights earlier.

Now they were filthy.

Chocolate stained the front.

Gray dust covered his elbows.

Dark marks circled both knees.

One sock was missing.

Tears had dried in crooked lines down his cheeks.

And when he saw me standing in the doorway, the relief in his eyes destroyed something inside me.

“Ethan?”

I rushed forward.

He tried to stand.

“Stay down.”

The command came from my mother-in-law.

Vivian Whitman sat calmly on my white sofa, holding a baby girl wrapped in pink lace.

She looked like a queen holding a royal heir.

Ethan froze halfway up.

I slowly turned toward Vivian.

“What did you just say?”

She didn’t even blink.

“He made a mess.”

My husband, Richard, stood near the fireplace with a glass of bourbon in one hand.

Dark blue suit.

Perfect tie.

Not a hair out of place.

As if finding our son crawling on the floor was completely normal.

Beside him stood a beautiful brunette I had never seen before.

She looked about thirty.

Expensive dress.

Gold earrings.

One hand resting casually on Richard’s arm.

She smiled.

That smile told me more than any confession could have.

I scooped Ethan into my arms.

He trembled against my chest.

“What happened?”

His fingers grabbed my blouse.

“I wanted the truck.”

“What truck?”

“The pink baby’s toys.”

Vivian sighed.

“He threw a tantrum because I wouldn’t let him touch Chloe’s things.”

I stared at her.

“Who is Chloe?”

The brunette looked at Richard.

Richard placed his bourbon on the table.

“My daughter.”

The words hit me harder than a slap.

My stomach turned.

I looked at the baby.

Then the woman.

Then Richard again.

“Your what?”

He exhaled impatiently.

“Don’t make a scene.”

I almost laughed.

“A scene?”

Ethan buried his face in my shoulder.

“Daddy said I’m bad.”

I kissed his forehead.

Richard frowned.

“He needs discipline.”

“He’s four.”

“And you baby him.”

“He is a baby!”

Brooke finally spoke.

Her voice was soft and fake.

“Richard has been under a lot of pressure.”

I looked at her.

“And you are?”

“Brooke.”

She hesitated.

“Chloe’s mother.”

My grip tightened around Ethan.

Vivian smiled down at the infant.

“Chloe is family now.”

Then she looked directly at Ethan.

“That boy needs to learn where he belongs.”

Something inside me became very calm.

Dangerously calm.

I stood.

“Where does my son belong?”

No one answered.

I looked at Richard.

“Go ahead.”

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t do this.”

“Say it.”

“Amanda.”

“Say it.”

Richard pointed at Ethan.

“That boy doesn’t belong in this family.”

Silence.

Even Brooke looked uncomfortable.

Ethan lifted his head.

His eyes filled with fresh tears.

“Daddy?”

Richard looked away.

That was the moment my marriage ended.

Not when I discovered another woman.

Not when I saw the baby.

When the man Ethan called Daddy refused to look at him.

I slowly scanned the room.

The house my father helped me buy.

The company Richard ran because I had given him the opportunity.

The furniture my money paid for.

Then I noticed the tiny green light above the hallway.

The security camera.

Still recording.

I kissed Ethan’s dirty hair.

Then I looked at Richard.

“If my son doesn’t belong in this family…”

I paused.

“…then none of you belong in my house.”

Richard laughed.

Actually laughed.

“You think you can throw me out?”

“Yes.”

“You’re emotional.”

“No.”

I glanced at the camera.

“I’m finally paying attention.”

His smile weakened.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

I picked up my phone.

May you like

“By tomorrow morning, you’ll understand.”

And for the first time that night, Richard stopped smiling.
