Chapter 5 - THE STORY VANESSA SOLD

The paramedics checked Claire first.

Daniel watched from the dining room doorway while an officer spoke gently to Lily in the sitting room. Claire stayed within arm’s reach of her daughter.

Vanessa sat across the hall.

Marcus stood beside an officer, insisting he needed his phone.

“You’ll have your chance to make calls,” the officer said.

Daniel barely heard him.

For six months, he had believed Vanessa understood the parts of his life Claire couldn’t tolerate anymore.

The late nights. The pressure. His habit of shutting down when a conversation became difficult.

Vanessa had listened without arguing.

Then she had started explaining Claire to him.

Claire was bitter.

Claire wanted more money.

Claire was teaching Lily to reject her.

Every explanation had made Daniel’s life simpler.

Every explanation had cost someone else.

Detective Nora Reyes arrived shortly after eleven.

She listened without interrupting, then asked Daniel a question he couldn’t dodge.

“When did you last speak directly to Claire before tonight?”

“Tuesday.”

“About?”

“Lily’s pickup time.”

“Anything else?”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“No.”

Reyes waited.

“She asked me to meet her alone. Vanessa told me Claire wanted to reopen the divorce settlement.”

“Did Claire say that?”

“No.”

Across the hall, Vanessa rose.

“Daniel, you know how she gets.”

He looked at her.

For months, that sentence had ended conversations.

Now he heard what it actually did.

It made another person’s pain sound like a character flaw.

“Sit down,” he said.

Vanessa’s eyes hardened.

“You married me.”

“Yes.”

“You chose me.”

“Yes.”

“And now you’re going to let her ruin everything?”

Daniel looked toward Lily.

His daughter had retrieved her teddy bear, but she held it by one leg instead of hugging it.

“No,” he said. “I’m going to stop helping you.”

Reyes asked permission to examine his phone messages. Daniel handed it over.

A few minutes later, she returned with a screenshot Claire had shown her.

The message appeared to come from Daniel.

Come at four. We need your signature. Bring no one.

Daniel stared.

“I didn’t send that.”

“What time did you have your phone yesterday afternoon?”

He remembered leaving it in his study while swimming with Lily.

Vanessa had brought him a towel.

And told him she had taken care of dinner.

Reyes looked toward the hall.

Then an officer hurried in from the kitchen.

“Detective. The brother’s phone just lit up.”
