Chapter 11 - Grace’s Voice

Daniel brought an old phone in a padded envelope.

“I copied the file,” he said. “But I kept the original.”

We sat in Mara’s office again.

Outside, people moved through an ordinary afternoon. Delivery trucks. Lunch breaks. A woman laughing into her phone.

Inside, my dead wife cleared her throat.

“Okay. That light means it’s recording, right?”

Daniel gave a small, broken laugh.

On the screen, Grace sat beside a window wearing a blue cardigan.

She looked tired.

Not like she did at the end.

Just tired enough that I wanted to reach through the screen and bring her a blanket.

“Daniel,” she said, “if I make this a letter, I’ll rewrite it fifty times.”

She smiled.

“I’m sorry we lost so much time.”

Beside me, Daniel pressed his hands together.

Grace talked about the day he was born. His hair. The way he stopped crying when she put a finger against his palm.

She talked about the choice she had made and the choices she had not felt free to make.

Then her face grew serious.

“If Eleanor contacts you again, please tell Martin.”

Mara leaned forward.

“She called yesterday. She says Richard deserves to know. He does. But he deserves to hear it from me, not as a threat with a price attached.”

I stared at the screen.

“I was ashamed for so long that shame started making my decisions. I don’t want that for you.”

Grace paused to catch her breath.

“Richard is a good man. He’ll be hurt. He may be angry. But if you ever need him, give him a chance to be better than his first reaction.”

I covered my mouth.

Daniel stopped the recording.

“There’s more, but it’s personal.”

“You don’t have to show me.”

His eyes filled.

“I thought you hated me.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I know that now.”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then I put my hand on his shoulder.

He leaned forward, and I held Grace’s son while he cried for the mother we had both lost.

Mara gave us time.

Then her phone buzzed.

It was the accountant.

She listened, asked one question, and turned toward us.

“The business that received Lily’s money has a second account.”

“In whose name?”

May you like

Mara looked at me.

“Eleanor’s. Opened before you married her.”
