Chapter 11 - The Man in the Hospital Bed

Lorenzo survived surgery.

That should have felt simple.

It didn’t.

By morning, I knew my husband had asked his company for help.

I knew someone had buried the request.

And I knew I had just spent the night keeping the company’s owner alive.

Reyes arranged for a hospital social worker to sit with Emma while I went upstairs.

An officer stood outside Lorenzo’s room.

Inside, machines hummed beside the bed.

The smiling-bear bandage was still above his eyebrow.

It made me angrier than it should have.

He opened his eyes.

“Emma?”

“Safe.”

His shoulders loosened.

I stayed near the door.

“Daniel called your office.”

Lorenzo looked at me.

“He reported a suspicious load. He said he was afraid.”

“I didn’t hear it.”

“Did you make sure someone would?”

He said nothing.

There was my answer.

“My husband came home that week and checked the lock twice every night,” I said. “I thought he was worried about money.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“I told him to quit. He said one more paycheck. Just one.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t hand me that like it pays for something.”

His face tightened.

But he didn’t argue.

I stepped closer.

“Did you know what your company carried?”

“Not every load.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

A long silence passed.

Then he said, “I knew some contracts were criminal.”

My stomach turned.

“And you kept taking the money.”

“Yes.”

The honesty didn’t soften it.

It made the room colder.

“I didn’t order your husband’s death,” he said.

“But you built the place where it could happen.”

His eyes stayed on mine.

“Yes.”

I had expected denial.

A speech.

Something I could throw back at him.

Instead, he reached for the call button.

When the nurse arrived, he asked her to bring Detective Reyes.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“What I should have done before someone died.”

“People already died.”

“I know.”

I turned to leave.

He spoke again.

“Nora. My sister didn’t keep that vault.”

I stopped.

“My father did. After he died, the system kept saving the wired camera feeds.”

“Then why didn’t you know where it was?”

“He didn’t trust either of us.”

The door opened.

Reyes stood there with a sealed evidence bag.

“We found another account ledger,” she said.

Lorenzo stared at it.

May you like

Then his face changed.

“That one,” he said quietly, “will put me in prison too.”
