Chapter 3: Everything Falls Apart

News travels quickly when wealthy people panic.
By that afternoon Shawn's employer had already received a copy of the civil complaint.
His position required a clean public reputation.
Assaulting an elderly parent while living in company-owned housing wasn't exactly ideal.
Human Resources placed him on immediate administrative leave pending investigation.
Ashley wasn't doing much better.
Her social media had always been filled with photos of the mansion.
"My dream home."
"Our forever house."
"Our success."
Someone leaked the eviction notice.
Then someone else leaked the kitchen security footage.
Millions watched Shawn throw boiling coffee at his own mother over a bowl of rice.
The internet had already chosen its side.
Sponsors quietly canceled Ashley's influencer contracts.
Her luxury brand partnerships disappeared within forty-eight hours.
She spent the evening crying over emails that all sounded the same.
"We are terminating our collaboration effective immediately."
Meanwhile, I packed only one suitcase.
Not because I had nowhere to go.
Because I no longer wanted to stay in a house poisoned by greed.
The company's executive director met me outside.
"Mrs. Harrison," he asked gently, "where would you like to live now?"
I smiled for the first time in months.
"I think it's time I finally bought myself a home."
May you like
Not for my children.
For me.
