Chapter 12 - THE DOOR SHE EXPECTED TO OPEN

They stayed at the hotel for three more nights.

During the day, Daniel worked through practical problems.

The children attended their interviews.

He met with the investigator.

Naomi helped him seek an order limiting Rachel’s contact.

Marcus helped move Rachel’s remaining possessions into the garage for a supervised collection.

Daniel changed passwords, checked accounts, and put a new number on every school form.

At night, none of that made Lily sleep.

She woke crying for Owen even when Daniel was beside her.

Owen kept asking what time it was.

“Why, buddy?”

“No reason.”

Daniel learned not to believe every “no reason.”

He also learned not to force every answer.

On the fourth morning, Owen said he wanted to go to school.

Daniel searched his face.

“You don’t have to rush.”

“I want to see Ben.”

It was the first thing he had asked for that belonged entirely to being eight.

So Daniel drove him himself.

Mrs. Ellis met them at the entrance.

Owen walked inside, turned once to check that his father was still there, and then disappeared down the hall.

Daniel sat in his truck for five minutes before driving away.

At 2:14, the school called.

His heart began pounding before he answered.

“Owen is safe,” Mrs. Ellis said.

“Where is he?”

“With me.”

“What happened?”

“His grandmother came to collect him. She said there was a family emergency.”

Daniel was already reaching for his keys.

“Did he leave?”

“No. Staff followed the updated instructions.”

Evelyn had insisted his father had asked her to come.

When the office called Daniel, she had suddenly decided the emergency could wait.

By the time he arrived, she was gone.

Owen sat in Mrs. Ellis’s office with a paper cup of water.

“I didn’t go,” he said immediately.

Daniel crouched.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“Grandma said you needed me.”

“What did you say?”

“I said she had to call you.”

Mrs. Ellis blinked quickly and looked down at her desk.

Daniel put his arms around his son.

This time, Owen held on without looking toward the door.

Outside, Daniel called Evelyn.

She answered sharply.

“You’ve made everyone act like I’m a stranger.”

“Why did you tell the school there was an emergency?”

“I wanted to speak to my grandson.”

“You lied to get him out.”

“I was going to bring him back.”

Daniel ended the call and reported what had happened.

That evening, Evelyn sent one final message.

You need to see what Rachel has been sending me.
