Chapter 2 — The Call That Changed Everything

Nobody spoke.

The only sound in the study was Linda's uneven breathing and the faint hum of the speakerphone.

Then my attorney, Mark, cleared his throat.

"Tom... there's something you should know."

Ethan looked relieved, convinced someone was finally about to defend him.

Instead, Mark continued.

"I never finalized the transfer documents Ethan requested three months ago."

My son's head snapped toward the phone.

"Dad... don't listen to him."

Mark ignored the interruption.

"Ethan contacted my office without your knowledge. He claimed you wanted to transfer the deed into his name immediately because your health was declining."

Linda gasped.

Ashley slowly released Ethan's arm.

"I refused," Mark said. "Because Tom never authorized it."

The room froze.

I looked at my son.

"So this wasn't an impulsive mistake."

He lowered his eyes.

"You planned this."

"Dad, we were just trying to make things easier."

"Easier for who?"

Silence.

Ashley finally spoke.

"We thought... eventually everything would belong to us anyway."

I nodded slowly.

"There it is."

Not love.

Not concern.

Just entitlement.

I ended the call and closed the leather folder.

"As of today," I said calmly, "every financial account Ethan has access to will be frozen."

His face turned white.

"You can't do that."

"I already have."

I opened my banking app.

One by one, I removed his authorization from every business account.

Then I looked at Ashley.

"You wanted the future."

"You've just lost it."

Within thirty minutes, Ethan and Ashley packed two suitcases.

For the first time in their marriage, they walked out of my house with nothing but what actually belonged to them.

The gate closed behind them.

May you like

This time...

They were the ones locked out.
