Chapter 4 - WHAT HAPPENED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS

Grant was arrested that night.

Not because of one dramatic speech.

Not because I demanded it.

Because the officers had witnesses.

Video.

Brooke’s injuries.

And enough evidence to take what happened seriously.

When they put Grant in handcuffs, Diane screamed.

“You can’t do this to him!”

Grant twisted around.

“Mom, call Mark!”

“I will!”

“Call him now!”

Then he looked at Brooke.

That look.

Even in handcuffs, he tried to control her.

“You know what happens if you do this.”

Officer Martinez turned him toward the door.

“Keep walking.”

Grant smiled at Brooke over his shoulder.

“You know.”

Those two words terrified her more than everything else.

After he was taken away, Brooke sat in the restaurant manager’s office with a blanket around her shoulders.

Her hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

I sat beside her.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I said, “Come home with me.”

“I can’t.”

I felt panic rise.

“Brooke—”

“No. I mean I can’t go to my house.”

“Then don’t.”

She stared at the floor.

“He’ll know I’m at yours.”

“How?”

“He knows everything.”

“What does that mean?”

“He knows where I go.”

“You mean because of your phone?”

She looked away.

“Sometimes.”

My stomach tightened.

“Sometimes?”

“I don’t know how.”

Officer Martinez returned.

“We should talk about somewhere safe for you to stay tonight.”

“She’s staying with me,” I said.

Brooke quickly shook her head.

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Why not?”

“Because he knows your address.”

“He’s in jail.”

“For tonight.”

There it was.

The truth people rarely understand from the outside.

Leaving wasn’t one decision.

It was a thousand decisions made while terrified.

The officer sat across from us.

“Do you believe Grant would come after you if he’s released?”

Brooke didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

“Has he threatened to?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Brooke stared at her hands.

“He told me if I embarrassed him, he’d make me regret being born.”

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She looked at me then.

“Because I knew you’d do exactly what you did tonight.”

“Call the police?”

“Fight him.”

“Of course I would.”

“And he knew that too.”

She wiped her face.

“He said if I ever told you, you’d become part of the problem.”

I understood immediately.

“He threatened me?”

“He never said it directly.”

“What did he say?”

Brooke took a breath.

“He said accidents happen to women who bring their mothers into private business.”

The room went cold.

Officer Martinez wrote something down.

“Brooke, do you have children with Grant?”

“No.”

“Any pets?”

Her face fell.

“Charlie.”

“Dog?”

“Yes. He’s at the house.”

I saw the next trap before she said it.

“I have to get him.”

“No,” I said.

“Mom—”

“No.”

“I can’t leave him there.”

“You are not going back alone.”

Brooke started crying.

“He’ll hurt Charlie to punish me.”

We arranged for an officer to accompany us.

At nearly midnight, we drove to Brooke’s house.

A beautiful place.

Two stories.

White siding.

A porch Brooke had decorated every fall.

From the outside, it looked like the kind of house people saved pictures of online.

Inside, it felt like a crime scene.

Brooke unlocked the door.

“Charlie?”

No barking.

She froze.

“Charlie!”

She ran down the hall.

I followed.

The back door was open.

The dog was gone.

On the kitchen counter sat Brooke’s laptop.

The screen was cracked.

Next to it was a handwritten note.

Four words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED.

Officer Martinez stared at the paper.

Then she looked toward the open back door.

“Was anyone else supposed to have access to this house?”

Brooke shook her head.

“No.”

And suddenly, we all realized something impossible.

Grant had been in police custody for hours.

May you like

Which meant he hadn’t left that note.

Someone else had.
