Chapter 8 - THE POLICY

I read the document three times.
It still said the same thing.
LAUREN MILLER.
Beneficiary.
$500,000.
“This can’t be real.”
Daniels leaned forward.
“The policy itself is real. The beneficiary change appears fraudulent.”
James’ voice was low.
“When was it submitted?”
Daniels checked.
“Eight months before Emma was born.”
I felt sick.
The same period Lauren had shoved me.
James saw the connection.
“So she changes the policy. Then Rachel gets pregnant. Then she assaults her?”
Daniels raised a hand.
“We have to be careful about assumptions.”
“I’m not assuming she changed it.”
“No.”
“But intent matters.”
I stared at the paper.
“What happens now?”
“Financial crimes is handling the fraud portion. We’re also reopening questions around the incident during your pregnancy.”
When Lauren’s attorney arrived later that afternoon, suddenly everything became denial.
She didn’t forge anything.
She didn’t steal anything.
She didn’t intentionally strike Emma.
She didn’t remember pushing me.
She blamed coworkers.
Banks.
Stress.
Alcohol.
Me.
Especially me.
That evening, Dad came to our house.
He looked exhausted.
“Your mother wants to see you.”
I shook my head.
“I’m not ready.”
“She understands.”
“Does she?”
He sat at our kitchen table.
“For thirty years, your mother believed protecting Lauren meant loving her.”
“And what did she think protecting me meant?”
Dad stared at his hands.
“I don’t know.”
That answer hurt because it was truthful.
He continued.
“I should’ve seen more.”
“You trusted Mom.”
“I trusted all of you.”
He looked toward the nursery.
“And now my granddaughter got hurt in my house.”
James put coffee in front of him.
“You didn’t hit Emma.”
“No.”
Dad wrapped his hands around the mug.
“But I stayed quiet.”
That was the thing nobody wanted to admit.
Lauren had been loud.
Cruel.
Explosive.
But the rest of us had helped build her power with silence.
Dad looked at me.
“I’m done being quiet.”
My phone rang.
Daniels.
“Mrs. Walker, we found video.”
I stood.
“Video of what?”
“There was an old doorbell camera at your apartment building when you were pregnant.”
My heart began pounding.
“We recovered archived footage.”
James stood beside me.
May you like
Daniels’ next words nearly stopped my breathing.
“It shows exactly what happened the night your sister came over.”
