Chapter 11 - ZERO

The counter reached zero.
Nothing happened.
For half a second, the room remained perfectly still.
Then the lights died.
A violent blast shook the corridor outside.
The observation glass cracked from corner to corner.
Emma screamed against my chest.
I dropped to the floor and covered her with my body.
A second explosion tore through the far side of the basement.
Ceiling panels crashed down.
Smoke poured through the ventilation grates.
“Move.”
Harris shouted.
Grant kicked at the damaged steel door.
It did not open.
Daniel crawled toward the control panel.
Blood ran from a cut above his eyebrow.
Gerald remained beside the wall.
His calm expression had disappeared.
“That was not the main charge.”
Grant said.
Gerald smiled weakly.
“No.”
“What did you arm?”
“The records room.”
Another explosion sounded deeper inside the clinic.
The floor jumped beneath us.
Daniel tore open the panel beneath the control console.
Wires spilled into his hands.
“You cannot stop it.”
Gerald said.
Daniel ignored him.
Vanessa crawled toward the fallen syringe.
Harris saw her.
“Do not touch it.”
She froze.
Emma buried her face against my neck.
“Mommy, I want to go home.”
“I know, baby.”
I rocked her carefully.
“We are going home.”
Vanessa looked at us.
Her eyes stayed fixed on Emma’s arms around me.
“She called you Mommy.”
Her voice sounded hollow.
I did not answer.
“She should call me that.”
Emma tightened her grip.
Vanessa flinched as though the child had struck her.
Smoke thickened near the ceiling.
Grant removed his jacket and wrapped it around his hand.
He struck the cracked observation window with an emergency stool.
The glass splintered but held.
Harris joined him.
Daniel pulled two wires apart.
The red emergency lights flickered.
The steel door lifted three inches.
“Again.”
Grant shouted.
Daniel connected another pair of wires.
The door rose higher.
Harris dropped onto the floor and pushed his shoulder beneath it.
“Get the children out.”
I lowered Emma toward the gap.
She clung to me.
“No.”
“You have to go first.”
“No, Mommy.”
Harris reached through.
“I’ve got her.”
I kissed Emma’s forehead.
“I am right behind you.”
She stared into my eyes.
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
I pushed her beneath the door.
Harris pulled her through.
Lily waited on the other side with an agent.
She wrapped both arms around Emma.
“Sarah.”
Daniel called.
I turned.
Vanessa had grabbed him from behind.
One arm was locked around his neck.
The broken syringe was pressed against his skin.
“Open the door completely.”
She demanded.
Daniel’s hands stopped over the wires.
“Let him go.”
I said.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You stole everything.”
“I did not steal Emma.”
“You lived my life.”
“I did not know.”
“You got her birthdays.”
Her voice cracked.
“You got her first words.”
“You got every night she cried.”
Her grip tightened around Daniel.
“I got a photograph and a lie.”
For the first time, I saw something beneath her cruelty.
Not innocence.
Not forgiveness.
Grief.
But grief did not excuse what she had done.
“You were lied to.”
I said.
“So was I.”
“You still had her.”
“You hurt her.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“She rejected me.”
“She did not know you.”
“She should have felt it.”
“She is a child.”
“She chose you.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“She reached for the person who made her feel safe.”
Vanessa’s hand trembled.
The syringe shifted against Daniel’s neck.
Gerald began moving behind her.
I saw his hand reach toward a piece of fallen metal.
Daniel saw it too.
“Vanessa.”
He said carefully.
“Gerald is behind you.”
She turned.
Gerald swung the metal bar.
Daniel ducked.
The bar struck Vanessa across the shoulder.
She collapsed.
The syringe rolled away.
Daniel tackled Gerald before he could strike again.
They crashed into the control console.
Sparks burst from the wall.
The steel door began descending.
“Sarah, go.”
Daniel shouted.
I dropped and rolled beneath it.
Grant followed.
Daniel stayed behind.
The door slammed shut between us.
I hit the metal with both hands.
“Daniel.”
His face appeared through the small observation window.
Gerald attacked him from behind.
The two men disappeared from view.
“Open it.”
I shouted.
Grant grabbed my shoulders.
“We cannot.”
“Daniel is in there.”
“The room is filling with smoke.”
“Open it.”
A deep rumble moved through the basement.
The ceiling above us split.
Grant pulled me backward as concrete struck the floor.
The observation window vanished behind dust.
Emma cried out.
I ran to her.
She wrapped herself around me.
The agents pushed us toward the stairwell.
Harris carried Lily.
Behind us, another explosion tore through the sealed room.
The blast knocked us forward.
I looked back once.
The steel door bent outward.
May you like
Fire filled the corridor.
Daniel was gone.
