Chapter 13 - The Witness Chair

The trial came months after the kitchen.

By then Ruby had returned to school, learned new ways to catch a ball, and stopped asking for the yellow dress.

She still froze when adults raised their voices.

Before the trial, my parents entered pleas to charges arising from their own conduct.

Their agreements did not erase Vanessa’s case, and they did not require me to forgive them.

Dad would testify.

Mom admitted enough in court to stop calling the whole thing a misunderstanding.

She still did not call me.

By then, she was not allowed to.

Renee arranged a separate waiting area for me.

Ruby stayed with Jo, following the plan made with the people supporting her.

The lawyers could present the central events through the recording, medical evidence, and adult witnesses.

My daughter did not have to sit in a room while strangers argued over the worst day of her life.

That was the first good news the courthouse gave us.

When I took the stand, Vanessa looked almost ordinary.

Her attorney asked about our difficult relationship.

“Yes,” I said.

“You resented your sister?”

“I was afraid of her temper.”

“You argued with her that afternoon?”

“I tried to stop her from hurting my daughter.”

The recording played.

I looked at the jurors instead of the screen.

One man pressed his lips together when my mother offered Vanessa water.

A woman lowered her eyes when my voice came through the speakers asking Ruby to wake up.

Vanessa stared at the tabletop.

Then Dad took the stand.

He looked older than he had in the parking lot.

Dana asked why he initially described a fall.

“I wanted to protect my daughter.”

“Which daughter?”

He did not answer immediately.

The silence spread across the room.

“Vanessa,” he said at last.

“And when Claire tried to reach Ruby?”

“I got in her way.”

“Why?”

His eyes moved toward me.

“Because that was what we always did.”

Dana let the answer sit.

Then she placed the draft letter in front of him.

“Let’s talk about what your wife asked you to change.”
