Chapter 11 - The Boy Who Kept the Video

Rachel brought Bryce over the following afternoon.
He sat at the kitchen table with his phone between his palms.
“I wasn’t filming Amelia.”
Gabriel pulled out a chair.
“You don’t need to defend yourself before you tell me.”
“I was making a video of Biscuit.”
Bryce looked at his mother.
“She came in while I was recording.”
Rachel touched his shoulder.
“Show him.”
The video began with Biscuit trying to pull a sock from beneath the refrigerator.
Theo laughed off-camera.
Then Amelia’s voice.
“Can I call Dad now?”
Marlene answered from somewhere behind the phone.
“He’s working.”
“He said after dinner.”
“I said no.”
The camera shifted.
Amelia stood near the counter with an envelope in her hand.
“What’s that?” Marlene asked.
“The mail.”
“Why is it open?”
“It was already—”
“Don’t lie.”
Bryce had turned the phone toward the floor, but the recording continued.
Amelia said, “It has Daddy’s name.”
Then came the sentence Gabriel would hear in his head for months.
“Your father pays me to deal with you. Stop making it harder.”
A chair scraped.
“Take your plate to the kitchen.”
The video ended.
Bryce stared at the table.
“I should’ve told.”
Gabriel wanted to say yes.
He wanted every person who had known to understand the cost.
But Bryce was twelve.
Marlene had been the adult.
“You were scared.”
Bryce nodded.
“She said you’d think I was causing trouble.”
Gabriel looked at Rachel.
The same threat.
Different child.
“Thank you for telling me now.”
Lena helped them preserve the original recording without editing it or circulating it.
Gabriel watched it only once more.
He didn’t need to keep hurting himself to understand.
That evening, Everett called.
“Marlene knows there’s a video.”
“How?”
“She called Bryce. Rachel answered.”
Gabriel checked with his sister.
She had already blocked further direct contact with the boys and saved the messages.
Marlene was losing access to everyone she could pressure.
That made her careless.
The following morning, Gabriel arrived at school for a meeting and found her in the front office.
Amelia stood behind the secretary.
Marlene had one hand extended toward her.
“We’re going home,” she said.
The secretary remained between them.
“Her father is the approved pickup contact today.”
Marlene turned.
She saw Gabriel.
Then she pointed at Amelia.
“Tell him what you told me.”
Amelia’s face went pale.
Gabriel stopped a few feet away.
“What did she tell you?”
May you like
Marlene smiled.
“That she wants her family back.”
