Chapter 6 - THE WORDS THEY WANTED

The recorder belonged to Martin.
He had purchased it the morning I came home.
That detail mattered because Evelyn was already claiming the whole thing had been a brief argument that got out of hand.
You don't buy equipment for an accident.
Ortiz interviewed Maya again the next morning, with a victim advocate beside her.
Maya asked me to stay outside.
I wanted to argue.
Instead, I got her a fresh cup of ice and left.
Later, she told me what the detective had confirmed.
The recording had captured Martin coaching her through the confession.
“I took funds without Caleb's knowledge,” he told her to say.
Maya's voice followed, thin and hesitant.
Then came the scrape of a chair.
A bottle cap twisting.
“Can I have some?”
“Finish first,” Evelyn answered.
Maya stopped describing it.
I waited.
“The knife was for a package,” she said finally.
“Martin opened the recorder with it. Then he left it where I could see it.”
“Did he threaten you with it?”
“He didn't have to pick it up.”
She rubbed at the hospital adhesive on her arm.
“The tape was for my hands if I kept hitting the door. That's what your mother said.”
I couldn't look at her without seeing that dark room.
She noticed.
“Don't do that.”
“What?”
“Look at me like I'm still in there.”
I forced my eyes back to hers.
“Okay.”
In the afternoon, Ortiz spoke to us together.
The audio continued after Maya refused to read the next sentence.
Martin and Evelyn had argued near the open doorway while Maya lay a few feet away.
They apparently believed the recorder was paused.
It wasn't.
Evelyn had said, “He isn't supposed to be home until Friday.”
Martin answered, “Then we have two days to get her signature.”
Friday.
They had planned around my absence.
They had sent messages from her phone to keep me from calling.
And when she wouldn't do what they wanted, they had locked the door again.
I asked whether Martin had been arrested.
“We're working on locating him,” Ortiz said.
At seven, Maya's new phone rang.
Only Nora, the hospital, Ortiz, and I had the number.
The screen showed the hospital's main line.
Maya answered.
Her face changed.
She put it on speaker.

Martin's voice filled the room.
“Tell Caleb to bring the blue folder, and we can still keep his name out of this.”
