Chapter 3 – The Family's Lies Collapse

Three days after the attack, officers arrived at the Salgado residence just before sunrise.
Tomás opened the front door wearing pajamas, irritated more than concerned.
"What is this about?"
Detective Vargas handed him a warrant.
"We're investigating aggravated domestic violence and attempted homicide."
Tomás laughed.
"My wife slipped."
"My mother tried to help her."
Graciela quickly joined him.
"That girl has always been unstable."
"She probably hurt herself just to destroy our family."
Detective Vargas simply nodded.
"I expected you'd say that."
He signaled toward another officer carrying a laptop.
"Let's watch something."
The screen displayed footage from a security camera mounted above Doña Alicia's garage.
Rain blurred the edges of the image.
But the kitchen windows of the Salgado house were perfectly visible.
The curtains had never been fully closed.
The video showed Graciela raising the rolling pin.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then Valeria collapsed.
Seconds later, Tomás entered.
Instead of helping her...
He kicked her hand away from her purse.
Every movement.
Every moment.
Captured.
No sound was necessary.
The images spoke loudly enough.
Graciela's face drained of color.
Tomás whispered,
"This..."
"This isn't the whole story."
Detective Vargas wasn't finished.
Another officer stepped forward carrying financial documents seized under court order.
"Mr. Salgado..."
"Would you like to explain why ninety-four percent of your wife's salary has been transferred into accounts owned solely by your mother?"
Tomás froze.
Graciela looked at him.
He looked back at her.
Neither answered.
Then Detective Vargas revealed the final blow.
"The hospital also found evidence of an untreated miscarriage caused by delayed medical care eighteen months ago."
"We're reopening that investigation."
Don Ernesto suddenly collapsed into a chair.
His hands began shaking uncontrollably.
"I told her..."
"I told Graciela we should call an ambulance."
His wife spun toward him.
"Be quiet."
"No."
For the first time in forty-two years of marriage...
He refused.
His voice cracked.
"I watched my daughter-in-law lose a baby."
"I watched my wife break her leg."
"And I said nothing."
He covered his face.
"I'm guilty too."
Handcuffs clicked around Graciela's wrists.
Then Tomás'.
As neighbors quietly gathered behind their gates, both were escorted into separate police vehicles.
The family that had spent years protecting appearances was finally exposed.
