Chapter 14 - The Dinner Table Turns

The police reopened Caroline’s case.

Margaret was not immediately arrested.

That drove Daniel crazy.

It almost drove me crazy too.

But old crimes move slowly.

Evidence matters.

Memory matters.

Forensics matter.

What happened next moved much faster.

Margaret’s competency petition against Richard collapsed.

Her attorney withdrew after the restored security footage surfaced and Rebecca gave a sworn statement regarding Margaret’s involvement in the clinic donor switch.

The fertility clinic placed three employees on administrative leave.

Rebecca faced criminal investigation for falsifying medical records.

Ethan hired his own lawyer.

And I filed for legal separation.

He came to the apartment the night before our next ultrasound.

He looked thinner.

“I want to go tomorrow.”

I stood in the doorway.

“No.”

His face fell.

“I’m still her father.”

I didn’t answer immediately.

That was the hardest part.

Biology wasn’t what made Ethan her father.

I still believed that.

But fatherhood required more than wanting the title.

It required being safe.

Being honest.

Being brave when it mattered.

“You can become her father,” I said.

He stared at me.

“I already am.”

“Then act like one.”

His eyes filled.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Stop asking me to tell you.”

He nodded.

Then handed me an envelope.

“What is this?”

“Everything.”

Inside were copies of every email between him and Rebecca.

Every message with Margaret.

Every clinic record he had saved.

“I gave the originals to the police and the clinic.”

I looked up.

“Why now?”

“Because protecting myself is what got us here.”

That was the first thing he had said in weeks that sounded like growth instead of guilt.

“I’m also testifying against Mom.”

“You should.”

“I know.”

He looked toward my stomach.

“Is she moving?”

I hesitated.

Then nodded.

He smiled through tears.

“I miss her.”

That hurt.

Because I believed him.

Two weeks later, Margaret asked for one final family meeting.

Nobody wanted to go.

Sarah advised against it.

Then Richard said something that changed our minds.

“We spent forty years letting Margaret control every room by making everyone afraid of what she might say. I want one room where she doesn’t.”

So we returned to the same dining room.

The same table.

The same place where she had shoved me.

This time, I sat near the door.

Daniel sat beside Richard.

Lauren beside me.

Ethan sat alone.

Margaret entered last.

She looked smaller.

Not physically.

Just less powerful.

Her eyes landed on Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel nodded.

“Me.”

She sat.

Nobody offered food.

Nobody poured wine.

Richard spoke first.

“I withdrew you as my medical proxy.”

Margaret smiled bitterly.

“Congratulations.”

“I also filed for divorce.”

Her smile vanished.

Lauren looked down.

Margaret stared at Richard.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I already did.”

“You pathetic old man.”

Richard didn’t react.

Daniel slid a DNA report across the table.

“We tested.”

Margaret didn’t touch it.

Daniel continued.

“Richard isn’t my biological father.”

Lauren inhaled sharply.

“Thomas was.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Daniel leaned forward.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

One word.

Forty years of destruction.

One word.

Richard whispered, “Why?”

Margaret opened her eyes.

“Because Thomas was weak.”

Daniel laughed.

“You framed a teenager because your brother had a child?”

“He would have destroyed the estate.”

“It wasn’t yours.”

“It belonged to our family.”

“And I was family.”

“You were Caroline’s mistake.”

Richard stood so fast his chair hit the wall.

“Enough.”

Margaret smiled.

Then she looked at me.

“And you.”

I felt my daughter move.

Margaret pointed at my stomach.

“You think you won?”

I said nothing.

“That baby exists because of me.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“No.”

“I made sure Rebecca changed the donor.”

“You manipulated us.”

“I preserved the bloodline.”

I laughed.

Margaret frowned.

“What’s funny?”

“You still don’t understand.”

“Understand what?”

I stood slowly.

“You did all of this for blood.”

“Yes.”

“You shoved me because I said I was having a girl.”

Her jaw tightened.

“You controlled your husband. Your son. Daniel. Caroline. Rebecca. Everyone.”

Margaret stared at me.

“And?”

“And after everything you did, there’s one decision you still don’t control.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What decision?”

I placed one hand over my belly.

“You will never meet her.”

For the first time since I had known Margaret Hollis, she had no answer.

Then the doorbell rang.

Richard frowned.

“Who is that?”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

May you like

Two police officers were standing outside.

And one of them was holding an arrest warrant.
