Chapter 11 - The Old Plant

Police told me to stay behind.

I didn’t.

Neither did Daniel.

The old Mercer textile plant sat on the edge of town behind rusted gates and broken windows.

Police surrounded the property.

A negotiator tried calling Margaret.

No answer.

Daniel stood beside me behind an armored vehicle.

“You should be at the hospital.”

“I’m done waiting in safe rooms while everyone decides my life.”

“You’re pregnant.”

“I noticed.”

Despite everything, he almost smiled.

Then a police captain approached.

“We have three people confirmed inside.”

“Margaret, Ethan, Howard,” Daniel said.

“Yes.”

“Any weapons?”

“Unknown.”

A phone rang inside the command vehicle.

The captain answered.

Then looked at me.

“She wants Claire.”

Daniel immediately said, “No.”

I held out my hand.

“Give me the phone.”

“Claire.”

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

The captain gave me the receiver.

Margaret spoke.

“You finally found your voice.”

“You tried hard enough to take it.”

She laughed.

“You think you understand anything?”

“I understand you built Ethan’s entire life on a lie.”

Silence.

“That got your attention.”

“You have no idea what Howard did.”

“He gambled away company money.”

“He was sick.”

“He stole.”

“He was desperate.”

“My grandfather bought him out.”

“He humiliated him.”

“And you punished me for it?”

“You benefited.”

“I wasn’t born.”

“Your family always says that. As if wealth has no memory.”

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head slowly.

Margaret continued.

“Ethan was supposed to restore what belonged to him.”

“By marrying me?”

“Yes.”

My stomach twisted.

“You planned that?”

“I introduced you.”

I remembered.

A charity gala.

Margaret had been on the board.

She had introduced Ethan to me.

My whole marriage had started with her.

“You picked me.”

“You were lonely.”

The cruelty of it stole my breath.

Margaret continued.

“You had money and no confidence. Perfect combination.”

Daniel grabbed the vehicle door to steady himself.

I kept my voice calm.

“You underestimated me.”

“No. I overestimated Ethan.”

“What do you want?”

“The original partnership agreement.”

Daniel whispered, “She thinks we have the paper original.”

I spoke into the phone.

“I have it.”

Daniel stared at me.

I didn’t.

Margaret went silent.

Then, “Bring it inside.”

“No.”

“Then Ethan dies.”

My heart lurched.

Despite everything, hearing those words hurt.

He was still the man I had loved.

The father of my child.

He had betrayed me.

But I didn’t want him dead.

“And Howard?”

“He has lived too long already.”

Daniel whispered, “Keep her talking.”

I said, “You’re going to kill your own sister’s son?”

Margaret screamed.

“He is my son!”

The line went silent.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel stared at me.

There it was.

The real secret.

“Margaret,” I whispered.

Her breathing came hard through the receiver.

“You gave birth to Ethan.”

She said nothing.

“Elaine didn’t.”

Still nothing.

Daniel’s eyes widened.

I continued.

“That’s why there was no legal adoption until he was eleven. You weren’t adopting your sister’s son. You were covering up your own.”

Margaret finally spoke.

“My father would have destroyed me.”

“Howard got you pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“And Elaine raised Ethan?”

“For eleven years.”

“Why?”

“Because she could give him a respectable home.”

My mind reeled.

“When Elaine died, you took him back.”

“He was mine.”

“Did Ethan know?”

“No.”

Behind me, a detective whispered, “We have movement on the east side.”

Margaret said, “Bring the agreement.”

Then the call ended.

A shot cracked inside the plant.

Everyone moved.

Police rushed the building.

Daniel grabbed me.

“Stay here.”

I watched officers disappear through broken doors.

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Two.

Then a stretcher came out.

A man lay on it.

Gray hair.

Blood on his shirt.

Howard.

He was alive.

Then Ethan emerged in handcuffs.

He was limping.

Our eyes met.

He shouted, “Claire!”

I stepped forward.

“Where’s Margaret?”

Ethan looked back toward the building.

“She locked herself in the records room.”

A police officer ran outside.

“Fire!”

Smoke curled from a broken window.

Ethan shouted, “The documents are in there!”

Daniel said, “Forget the documents.”

Ethan stared at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

Ethan’s face went white.

“She has Claire’s original birth certificate.”

I froze.

Daniel did too.

“Why does she have that?”

Ethan looked at me.

May you like

“Because Daniel isn’t your uncle.”

The burning window shattered behind him.
