Chapter 10 - THE CONFESSION

“Jason Bennett is not innocent.”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

The video timestamp was seven months old.

His face was pale.

His hands shook.

“I helped Robert move money through false accounts.”

Caroline paused the video.

“Did he just confess?”

Marcus nodded.

We continued.

Thomas explained that Robert’s medical supply companies had been overbilling clients and hiding income.

Jason became involved later.

At first, according to Thomas, Jason didn’t understand the full scheme.

Then he did.

And kept participating.

My name entered the picture because Robert needed clean identities to move money.

Jason offered mine.

I felt physically sick.

Thomas continued.

“Emily didn’t know.”

I clenched my fists.

“Jason provided her records.”

Tax information.

Social Security number.

Copies of my ID.

Then Lily was born.

Jason used my hospital exhaustion to get the power of attorney signed.

Robert used it to create accounts.

Thomas moved the money.

Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars was only one transfer.

There were more.

A lot more.

Then Thomas said something that stopped all of us.

“Jason wanted out.”

I leaned forward.

Thomas explained that after Lily was born, Jason began panicking.

He worried about prison.

About losing his medical sales career.

About me discovering everything.

Robert refused to let him leave.

So Jason stayed.

Not because he was trapped.

Because Robert paid him.

Then came the worst part.

“Diane knows.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course she knew.

“She told Jason family comes first.”

Thomas laughed bitterly on the video.

“Diane Bennett thinks family loyalty means everybody goes down together.”

The video ended with Thomas saying he had copied evidence.

Files.

Bank records.

Emails.

But he never said where he hid them.

The police received the video that night.

Federal investigators became involved three days later.

Suddenly, Robert stopped smiling.

Jason hired a criminal attorney.

Diane stopped calling me.

Brooke disappeared from social media.

For the first time, the Bennett family was quiet.

It didn’t last.

A week later, Jason asked to speak with me privately.

Caroline said no.

Jason’s attorney proposed a meeting with lawyers present.

I agreed.

Jason walked into the conference room looking like he hadn’t slept in days.

He sat across from me.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “I’m sorry.”

I laughed once.

“You’re going to have to be more specific.”

His eyes watered.

“For all of it.”

“That could take a while.”

“I never wanted Lily hurt.”

“But you let your mother hurt her.”

“I know.”

“You let them use my identity.”

“I know.”

“You watched me doubt myself for years.”

“I know.”

I leaned forward.

“Why did you marry me?”

His face crumpled.

Diane’s words echoed in my head.

You think Jason chose you.

Jason looked at the table.

“Robert introduced us.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He knew you had clean credit.”

The room went silent.

May you like

My marriage had not started with love.

It had started with a background check.
