Chapter 11 - NOAH WAS GONE

Police arrived in seven minutes.

It felt like seven years.

Sofia showed them the papers Margaret had presented.

They were fake.

Not inaccurate.

Not outdated.

Fake.

A forged court seal.

A forged judge’s signature.

Margaret had walked into my hotel with two men dressed like legal officers and taken my son.

Daniel denied knowing anything.

Of course he did.

When police questioned him outside company headquarters, he said, “I have no idea what my mother is doing.”

I watched from inside.

Liar.

I knew his face when he lied.

The smallest twitch near his left eye.

He had it now.

Rebecca grabbed my shoulders.

“Claire.”

“I’m going to kill him.”

“No.”

“She has my son.”

“I know.”

“I should have protected him.”

“You are protecting him.”

“He’s three.”

“I know.”

Marcus came running.

“We found Margaret’s car.”

“Where?”

“Traffic camera.”

He showed us.

Black Mercedes.

Heading north.

“Toward where?”

He zoomed out.

I knew immediately.

Lake George.

The old Hawthorne summer house.

The one on Briar Lane.

The one Margaret claimed she had sold years ago.

Police moved fast.

So did we.

Rebecca tried to keep me from going.

I refused.

The drive took less than two hours.

Longest two hours of my life.

I kept hearing Noah’s voice.

Mommy, promise nobody will take me.

I had promised.

And they had taken him anyway.

When we reached Briar Lane, police blocked the road.

I saw Margaret’s Mercedes outside the house.

My knees almost gave out.

“He’s there.”

An officer stopped me.

“You stay here.”

“That’s my child.”

“We have to clear the property.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

Rebecca held me back.

Then we heard shouting.

A door slammed.

Someone yelled, “RUNNING EAST!”

Officers moved.

Seconds later, Richard appeared from behind the house.

He was tackled near the trees.

Richard.

So he was involved too.

I screamed, “WHERE IS NOAH?”

He looked at me.

His face was wild.

“You did this!”

“Where is he?”

“You destroyed our family!”

I tried to lunge at him.

Rebecca grabbed me.

Then a police officer came out of the house carrying Noah.

My baby.

My knees collapsed.

“Noah!”

He saw me.

“Mommy!”

I ran.

The officer handed him to me.

Noah wrapped himself around my neck.

I held him so tight he cried.

“I’m sorry.”

“Grandma said you didn’t want me.”

My heart shattered.

“What?”

“She said you gave me away.”

I pulled back and looked into his face.

“No. Never.”

He started sobbing.

“Daddy said you were bad.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had been involved.

He had spoken to Noah.

Maybe on the phone.

Maybe before.

I looked toward the house.

“Where is Margaret?”

The officer’s face changed.

“She’s gone.”

“What?”

“There’s a back access road.”

My stomach dropped.

“She ran?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“We don’t know.”

Then another officer emerged holding a laptop.

“Mrs. Hawthorne?”

“Yes?”

“You need to see this.”

On the laptop was an open email draft.

Addressed to a journalist.

Subject:

THE TRUTH ABOUT CLAIRE HAWTHORNE.

Attached were documents.

Photos.

Medical records.

And a statement claiming I suffered from severe psychiatric instability.

All fake.

But one attachment was real.

A photograph of me from years earlier.

Standing outside a rehabilitation center.

Rebecca stared.

“What is that?”

My blood went cold.

Daniel knew exactly what it was.

And if the public saw it without context, he could destroy me.

May you like

Because the woman I had been visiting at that center was my mother.

And Daniel had spent years telling everyone she was me.
