Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

The name came from Gordon’s full confession.

The third person on Liam’s recording.

The man beside Eleanor on the boat.

I listened from a hospital room while Julian’s shoulder was treated.

Gordon’s voice crackled.

“Eleanor ordered Liam drugged.”

Hayes asked, “Who drove the boat?”

“I did.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Who pushed Liam overboard?”

Gordon hesitated.

Then answered.

“Julian.”

I stopped breathing.

Julian turned toward me.

“No.”

The recording continued.

Hayes said, “Julian Sterling?”

Gordon answered.

“Yes.”

I stared at the man beside me.

“You were there?”

“No.”

“Were you there?”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed whatever was left.

Rachel stood.

“You killed Liam?”

“No!”

Julian ripped the IV from his arm.

“I didn’t know what she was doing.”

Hayes stepped in front of him.

“Sit down.”

Julian shook his head.

“I thought we were going to bring him home.”

“From the boat?”

“Yes.”

He looked at Rachel.

“Mom told me he was drunk and suicidal.”

Tears poured down his face.

“She said if I didn’t come, he would hurt himself.”

“What happened?” I asked.

His whole body shook.

“We found him arguing with her.”

“Then?”

“He tried to call police.”

Julian covered his face.

“Mom told me to take his phone.”

Rachel whispered, “And you did.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“He shoved me.”

Julian gasped for air.

“I shoved him back.”

Silence.

“He hit the railing.”

Rachel stopped breathing.

“He went over.”

Julian sobbed.

“I jumped after him.”

I stared.

“What?”

“I tried to save him.”

He looked at Hayes.

“You know I did.”

Hayes nodded slowly.

“The physical evidence is consistent with someone entering the water.”

Julian continued.

“Mom stopped Gordon from turning the boat around.”

Rachel’s face twisted.

“No.”

“She said Liam was already gone.”

“You left him?”

“I was in the water!”

Julian screamed.

“I swam until I couldn’t feel my arms!”

The room went silent.

“She pulled me back into the boat.”

He broke down.

“Then she told me if I spoke, everyone would think I killed him.”

I finally understood.

The shame.

The silence.

The fear.

Eleanor had built Julian’s obedience around one terrible moment.

She made him believe he was a murderer.

Hayes said quietly, “The medical examiner found evidence Liam was alive after entering the water.”

Julian looked up.

“What?”

“He drowned.”

Julian cried harder.

“If the boat had turned around…”

Hayes nodded.

“He may have survived.”

Rachel covered her mouth.

So Julian had caused the fall.

But Eleanor chose to let Liam die.

That distinction didn’t erase the tragedy.

But it changed the truth.

Julian looked at me.

“I understand if you never speak to me again.”

I stared at him for a long time.

“I don’t hate you.”

His eyes filled.

“But I can’t marry you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“And I can’t build a family with a man who hides truth when he’s afraid.”

“I know.”

“I hope you become better.”

He swallowed.

“For our baby?”

I touched my stomach.

“No.”

His face fell.

“For yourself.”

Months later, Eleanor’s trial began.

Liam’s recorded voice.

Rachel’s recording.

Dr. Vale’s records.

Gordon’s testimony.

My medical files.

Julian’s confession.

Everything came out.

Eleanor was found guilty on multiple counts, including conspiracy leading to Liam’s death.

She received decades in prison.

But the final surprise came after sentencing.

The Sterling family trust was opened.

And the lawyer announced that Liam had changed one document three days before he died.

That single signature changed who inherited everything.
