CHAPTER 2 — The Truth Behind the Mercer Fortune

Evelyn tried to stop me.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about!” she shouted.

For the first time in years, her perfect image cracked.

The elegant woman who controlled every room suddenly looked desperate.

I calmly placed a folder on the table.

“I know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Inside were years of financial records.

Bank transfers.

Fake contracts.

Hidden payments.

Every lie had a number attached to it.

And numbers never lie.

“I spent three weeks reviewing the Mercer Foundation accounts,” I explained.

“The same foundation your late husband created to help families in need.”

Daniel looked down.

His father’s foundation had been his greatest pride.

And Evelyn had turned it into her personal bank account.

“I didn’t steal anything,” Evelyn said.

“You’re just trying to destroy me because I never accepted you.”

I smiled slightly.

“No.”

“You destroyed yourself.”

Then another video appeared.

This one was different.

It showed Evelyn meeting with a lawyer.

Talking about changing trust documents.

Talking about controlling Daniel.

Talking about making sure he never discovered the truth.

The chapel became silent.

Daniel looked like someone had finally removed a weight he had carried his entire life.

“My father trusted you,” he whispered.

Evelyn turned toward him.

“Daniel, I did everything for this family.”

“No,” he replied.

“You did everything for yourself.”

The words hurt her more than any accusation.

Because they came from the son she had controlled for years.

Then Evelyn made one final attempt.

“You think you’re better than me?” she asked me.

“You’re just a nobody who married into this family.”

I looked at my destroyed wedding dress.

Then back at her.

“You’re right about one thing.”

“I married into this family.”

“But I never needed this family’s money.”

The room stayed silent.

“My career built my life.”

“My intelligence built my reputation.”

“And your mistakes built this case.”

At that moment, the chapel doors opened.

Two police officers walked inside.

Everyone turned.

Evelyn’s face went white.

“No…”

One officer stepped forward.

“Evelyn Mercer, you are under arrest for fraud, embezzlement, and financial crimes.”

The guests whispered.

Cameras came out.

The woman who spent years humiliating others was finally facing public humiliation herself.

As they placed the handcuffs around her wrists, she looked at Daniel.

“You’re choosing her over your own mother?”

Daniel stared at her.

“I’m choosing the truth.”

Evelyn was taken away.

But the story wasn’t over.

Because there was one thing nobody expected.

After the police left, Daniel walked back to me.

He reached into his pocket.

And placed a small set of keys in my hand.

I looked confused.

“What is this?”

He smiled sadly.

“The Mercer estate.”

I froze.

“That was your mother’s house.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“It was my father’s house.”

Then he handed me another document.

A legal transfer.

Signed months earlier.

“My father changed the ownership before he died.”

“He knew my mother was dangerous.”

The keys felt heavier than metal.

They felt like justice.
