Chapter 14 - HER OWN WORDS

Derek opened a voice message.

Mom’s voice filled the hallway.

Naomi won’t ask for it back.

She never does.

I’ll handle the contribution form.

You just make sure the loan officer gets the right amount.

Mom lunged toward the phone.

“Turn that off.”

Derek held it away.

“You told me it was handled.”

“You said you needed the money!”

“I didn’t tell you to sign her name.”

Dad leaned against the wall.

For a moment, I thought he might fall.

Then he straightened.

“Send that to me.”

Derek stared at him.

“Dad—”

“Send it.”

I said nothing.

I did not need a confession performed for my benefit.

The paperwork already existed.

The lender already had my denial.

But hearing my mother say she could count on my silence changed something I could not put back.

Mom turned toward me.

“You know I would never hurt you.”

I looked down at the broken lid beside my feet.

“You counted on me being hurt quietly.”

Her mouth opened.

Closed.

Derek sent the message to Dad, who forwarded it to me.

Later, Sophie would preserve it with the other records and explain its limits.

A message alone did not answer every question.

It answered mine.

Mom sat on the bottom stair.

“I was trying to keep everyone together.”

“You told me to leave.”

“Derek needed—”

“I know what Derek needed.”

My voice cracked.

“I needed one person at that table to say I belonged.”

Dad covered his face.

Mom stared at me as if I had asked for something extravagant.

Then she whispered, “You always seemed fine.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I picked up the last photograph.

Grandma and me on the porch.

I was eleven.

She had one hand resting on my shoulder.

I carried it outside.

At the car, Ben asked if I wanted to stay with him that night.

“No.

I want to go home.”

My home.

Before I started the engine, Dad came down the steps.

“Your mother and I need to work out how to repay you.”

“No more promises without paperwork.”

“I understand.”

For the first time, I believed he might.

Then my phone rang.

The lender’s review contact wanted to ask me about another document.

May you like

One I had never seen.

And this time, it was dated three years earlier.
