Chapter 3 - BLUE LIGHTS

The dispatcher told me to leave the house if I could do so safely.

That was exactly what I planned to do.

I grabbed Lily’s coat from the hook.

Ryan blocked the front door.

“Megan, think.”

“Move.”

“You’re going to destroy this family.”

I almost laughed.

“Me?”

His face tightened.

“Mom made a bad judgment call.”

“One bad judgment call?”

I pointed toward the cabinet.

“How long has this been happening?”

He said nothing.

That silence answered me.

I reached for the doorknob.

Ryan didn’t move.

“Get out of my way.”

Diane stood behind us with a towel pressed against her gravy-covered blouse.

“She doesn’t leave with Lily.”

I turned.

“Excuse me?”

“That is Ryan’s child too.”

I stared at her.

“You’re the reason I’m leaving.”

Diane stepped forward.

“You think police are going to care because a kid missed lunch?”

“She missed lunch and dinner.”

“So dramatic.”

Lily buried her face in my shoulder.

I felt her body tremble.

That was it.

I stopped arguing.

I raised my phone.

“You are both being recorded.”

Diane froze.

Ryan’s eyes dropped to the screen.

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Ryan whispered, “Delete that.”

“No.”

“Delete it, Megan.”

“No.”

He reached for the phone again.

I shouted, “Back up!”

Someone pounded on the front door.

“Police!”

Ryan stepped away so fast it was almost funny.

I opened the door.

Two officers stood on the porch.

One was a woman in her forties with tired eyes and a calm voice.

“Ma’am, are you Megan Carter?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Officer Ruiz. Can we come inside?”

“Yes.”

Ryan immediately started talking.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Officer Ruiz looked past me.

“We’ll speak to everyone separately.”

Diane tried to interrupt.

“She attacked me.”

Ruiz glanced at the food all over Diane’s clothes.

“Ma’am, please wait in the kitchen.”

“She dumped my dinner on me!”

“Kitchen.”

Diane’s mouth dropped open.

For once, somebody wasn’t afraid of her.

A second officer, Officer Bell, crouched in front of Lily.

“Hi there. I’m Marcus.”

Lily clung tighter to me.

He didn’t move closer.

“That’s okay. You can stay with Mom.”

Officer Ruiz asked me what happened.

I showed her the photos.

The cabinet.

The untouched meals.

I showed her the recording.

Then I told her what Lily had said.

Ruiz’s expression changed.

“Has your daughter lost weight recently?”

The question punched me in the stomach.

“I—I don’t know.”

But I did.

I remembered Lily’s pants becoming loose.

I remembered telling myself she was growing taller.

I remembered her asking for seconds every night I was home.

I remembered her waking at two in the morning and asking for milk.

Oh God.

Officer Ruiz looked at Lily.

“We need her medically evaluated.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Ruiz turned.

“Sir, go back to the kitchen.”

“I’m her father.”

“And right now I’m telling you to step back.”

Ryan’s face darkened.

For the first time, I saw something beneath the charming smile he used with everyone else.

Anger.

Cold, ugly anger.

“You’re taking my wife’s word over mine?”

Ruiz stared at him.

“I’m looking at a hungry three-year-old and a cabinet full of food no one seems able to explain.”

Ryan said nothing.

Then Officer Bell came out of the kitchen carrying something in a clear evidence bag.

It was a small spiral notebook.

He looked at Ruiz.

May you like

“You need to see this.”

Diane went white.
