Chapter 7 - The Secret File Ryan Tried to Bury

The picture of Ryan standing outside my grandmother’s house stayed on my phone screen all night.

I couldn’t sleep.

Every small sound made me sit up.

A car passing.

A tree branch hitting the window.

The house settling.

My mind kept replaying the same thought.

He was watching us.

Not because he missed me.

Not because he wanted his family back.

Because he was afraid.

Afraid of what we had found.

And afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.

The next morning, Daniel arrived earlier than expected.

He walked into Grandma’s kitchen holding a thick envelope.

“I found something.”

The way he said it made my stomach tighten.

“What is it?”

He placed the envelope on the table.

“Something Ryan never expected anyone to see.”

Grandma looked at him.

“Tell us.”

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents.

Bank statements.

Property records.

Emails.

And one document at the bottom.

A divorce preparation file.

My hands went cold.

“Divorce?”

Daniel nodded.

“Ryan started preparing this almost a year ago.”

I stared at the papers.

Almost a year.

While I was waking up at night feeding Sophie.

While I was planning our daughter’s first birthday.

While I was trying to fix a marriage I thought was struggling.

He was planning my exit.

“Wait.”

I picked up one page.

“Why does this say he was documenting my behavior?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“What do you mean?”

I handed him the paper.

There were notes.

Dates.

Descriptions.

“She gets emotional during discussions.”

“She struggles with financial responsibility.”

“She may not be stable enough for full custody.”

My chest tightened.

“He was building a case against me.”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

Grandma’s face hardened.

“He was creating a story.”

A story where Ryan was the responsible husband.

And I was the unstable wife.

A story where he was protecting Sophie.

And I was the problem.

I felt sick.

Because it almost worked.

Then Daniel showed us something else.

An email between Ryan and an attorney.

The subject line:

“Custody Strategy.”

I read the first sentence.

“My goal is full control of assets and primary custody.”

My hands started shaking.

Full control.

Not reconciliation.

Not fixing things.

Control.

“He never planned to let me come back,” I whispered.

“No,” Daniel said.

“He planned for you to leave.”

That afternoon, we went through every box I had brought from the house.

Most of it was Sophie’s stuff.

Baby clothes.

Pictures.

A few toys.

Then Grandma noticed something.

A small envelope hidden inside the side pocket of my old diaper bag.

“Emily?”

I looked over.

“What?”

“Did you put this here?”

I shook my head.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a USB drive.

My heart started pounding.

“What is that?”

Daniel picked it up.

“We need to find out.”

We connected it to his laptop.

There were only three files.

The first was a spreadsheet.

The second was a scanned document.

The third was a video.

Daniel opened the spreadsheet.

My breathing stopped.

It was a list of payments.

Dates.

Amounts.

Names.

And at the top…

A title:

“Emily’s Account.”

My account.

But then I saw something worse.

A column labeled:

“Remaining Access.”

Next to my name was one word.

ACTIVE.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

He stared at the screen.

“It means someone still has access to your money.”

Before anyone could answer…

The laptop notification appeared.

A new email.

From Ryan.

The subject line:

“I told you to stop.”

And below it were six words.

May you like

Six words that made my blood run cold.

“I know where the files are.”
