CHAPTER 1: The Empire Strikes Back

The black SUV moved silently through the city streets.

For the first time in four years, I wasn’t sitting beside Andrew in the passenger seat of his luxury car.

I wasn’t smiling for cameras.

I wasn’t pretending to be grateful.

I wasn’t playing the role they created for me.

I was finally returning to who I had always been.

Mariana Escalante.

The daughter of Rafael Escalante.

Founder of one of the largest private investment groups in the country.

The woman whose family name opened doors that Andrew’s family had spent decades trying to enter.

But Andrew never knew.

Because I chose silence.

When I married him, I believed love mattered more than wealth.

I wanted to build something with him.

I wanted him to succeed because of his own efforts.

So I hid my identity.

I stepped away from the Escalante empire.

I changed my last name.

I lived a simple life.

And I watched the man I loved slowly become the man who destroyed my heart.

The SUV stopped in front of a towering glass building.

The logo on top shined under the city lights.

ESCALANTE GLOBAL HOLDINGS.

The moment I stepped inside, every employee stood.

Not because they feared me.

Because they respected me.

A man in his sixties walked toward me.

My father.

Rafael Escalante.

His eyes immediately went to the mark on my cheek.

For the first time in years…

The strongest man I knew looked powerless.

“Who did this to you?”

I remained silent.

Because if I spoke too quickly, my anger would speak for me.

Finally, I answered.

“My husband.”

The room went completely quiet.

My father closed his eyes.

Not from sadness.

From restraint.

“Andrew Collins?”

I nodded.

“He raised his hand against my daughter?”

I placed my handbag on the table.

“Yes.”

My father looked at the executives surrounding him.

Then he spoke four words.

“Activate the Phoenix Clause.”

Everyone froze.

The Phoenix Clause.

A legal agreement created years ago.

A protection system designed to reclaim every asset, investment, and company connected to Escalante influence if someone attempted to exploit the family.

And Andrew had done exactly that.

Because while he thought he owned his mansion…

My company owned the land.

While he thought his business was successful…

My investments kept it alive.

While he believed Brenda was replacing me…

He was about to lose everything.

My attorney placed a folder in front of me.

“Mrs. Escalante, once we proceed, Andrew Collins will lose access to every account connected to your financial support.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were years of documents.

Proof of every anonymous investment.

Every hidden rescue.

Every crisis I solved behind the scenes.

The truth they never knew.

I signed the final page.

“Begin.”

The next morning…

Andrew woke up expecting an apology.

Instead…

His phone stopped working.

His bank accounts showed restricted access.

His company’s stock began falling.

And the first person he called was me.

I watched his name appear on my screen.

For years, I answered immediately.

This time…

I let it ring.

Again.

And again.

Until it stopped.

Then another call came.

Brenda.

Then Margaret.

Everyone who ignored my pain suddenly remembered my existence.

May you like

I smiled.

The game had started.
