Chapter 1: The Morning They Lost Everything

The first sign that something was wrong was the silence.

Usually, Cross Enterprises was alive before sunrise.

Phones ringing.

Executives rushing.

Assistants carrying documents through the glass hallways.

A company worth billions never truly slept.

But that morning...

Every screen inside the headquarters went black.

Every financial department received the same message.

ACCESS RESTRICTED.

Employees stared at their computers in confusion.

Managers called IT.

Executives called the board.

Nobody understood what was happening.

Until Damian Cross walked into the building.

Confident.

Angry.

Still believing he was the most powerful man in the room.

He ignored the nervous employees and walked straight toward the executive floor.

"Why is everyone standing around?" he demanded.

His assistant looked terrified.

"Mr. Cross... we have a problem."

Damian rolled his eyes.

"A problem?"

"I run this company. Problems get solved."

The assistant swallowed.

"Sir... your access has been removed."

The hallway became silent.

Damian stared at him.

"What did you say?"

Before the assistant could answer, the elevator doors opened.

A group of lawyers stepped out.

Behind them was Isabella Montrose.

The same woman he had humiliated the night before.

The same woman he had slapped in front of everyone.

But today...

She looked different.

No fear.

No sadness.

No hesitation.

She wore a perfectly tailored white suit.

Her hair was neatly styled.

Her expression was calm.

Powerful.

Damian laughed when he saw her.

"You actually came here?"

He stepped closer.

"Did you really think walking away dramatically would make you important?"

Isabella looked at him quietly.

"I didn't walk away, Damian."

"I took back what was mine."

His smile disappeared slightly.

"What are you talking about?"

One of the lawyers stepped forward.

"Mr. Cross, allow me to explain."

He opened a folder.

"Cross Enterprises was built through financing provided by Montrose Holdings."

Damian frowned.

Everyone in the hallway listened.

"The controlling shares of this company have always belonged to Isabella Montrose."

A wave of shock moved through the building.

Damian laughed.

A nervous laugh.

"That's impossible."

"My family founded this company."

Isabella looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

"Your family managed it."

"There is a difference."

For the first time...

Damian looked uncertain.

The lawyer continued.

"Your family was given operational control twenty years ago."

"But ownership remained under the Montrose trust."

"Yesterday evening, after Mr. Cross committed an act of violence against Mrs. Montrose..."

He paused.

"The trust agreement was activated."

Damian's face changed.

He finally understood.

The company.

The money.

The mansion.

The lifestyle.

Everything.

Was connected to Isabella.

His wife.

The woman he called worthless.

Vanessa arrived moments later, still wearing designer sunglasses.

She looked around confused.

"What is happening?"

Nobody answered.

She walked toward Damian.

"Tell me this isn't true."

Damian didn't look at her.

May you like

For the first time in his life...

He looked afraid.
