Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MY MARRIAGE

For two years, Daniel had been telling Chloe he planned to leave me.

For two years, she had been waiting.

Sometimes patiently.

Sometimes angrily.

The handwritten letter was full of frustration.

You keep telling me after the next quarter.

After Jennifer’s promotion.

After your parents’ anniversary.

After the holidays.

Then the line that hurt most:

Now she wants a baby and you’re telling me to wait again.

I sat at the kitchen table holding that page.

Daniel had agreed to have Lily with me while maintaining another relationship.

Not because he had chosen our marriage.

Because a baby was another delay.

Another excuse.

Another image.

I cried that night.

Not because I wanted Daniel back.

I didn’t.

I cried for the woman I had been.

The woman who believed every business trip.

Every late meeting.

Every tired kiss.

Every “I love you.”

I mourned nine years all at once.

Then Lily cried upstairs.

And that sound saved me.

I wiped my face.

Picked up my daughter.

Held her against my chest.

And understood something simple.

My marriage had been a lie.

My daughter was not.

Three weeks later, the temporary custody hearing began.

Daniel arrived with a new strategy.

Remorse.

He looked tired.

Humbled.

He told the judge he had made “terrible personal decisions.”

He admitted the affair.

Admitted the transfers.

Denied financial fraud.

Then he cried when discussing Lily.

“I love my daughter.”

I believed that part.

Bad men can love their children.

Love does not automatically make them safe.

His attorney requested equal custody.

Rachel opposed.

She presented the recordings.

The financial deception.

The attempt to portray me as unstable.

Daniel’s messages to Chloe about getting “custody leverage.”

The judge’s expression changed.

Daniel’s attorney tried to argue they were private comments made during a stressful time.

Then Rachel played Daniel’s voicemail.

Once Jennifer loses it enough, I’ll have what I need.

Daniel looked down.

The judge ordered temporary primary custody to me, with supervised visitation for Daniel while the financial and family matters were investigated.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

Outside the courtroom, he followed me.

“Jennifer.”

I kept walking.

“Jennifer, please.”

I stopped.

He looked terrible.

No expensive suit could hide it.

“I’m sorry.”

I said nothing.

“I was selfish.”

“Yes.”

“I got lost.”

“No.”

He looked confused.

“You didn’t get lost, Daniel.”

I shifted Lily’s carrier.

“You made decisions.”

He cried.

“I love her.”

“I know.”

“I love you too.”

That actually made me angry.

“No.”

“I do.”

“You love having me.”

He stared at me.

“You loved knowing I’d be home while you did whatever you wanted.”

“That’s not fair.”

I laughed.

“Fair?”

He lowered his voice.

“Can we start over?”

“No.”

“Counseling?”

“No.”

“Jennifer—”

“No.”

He closed his eyes.

Then said,

“What do you want from me?”

I thought about it.

Four months earlier, I would have wanted an apology.

An explanation.

Maybe revenge.

Now the answer was easy.

“Nothing.”

I walked away.

But before I reached the elevator, Daniel called after me.

“There’s something you don’t know about Chloe.”

I stopped.

He wiped his face.

“The DNA result wasn’t the end of it.”

I turned.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel stared at Lily.

May you like

Then said,

“Ryan isn’t the father either.”
