Chapter 4 - The Nurse Who Changed Her Story

By sunrise, the hospital had become a fortress.
Security blocked the maternity floor.
No visitors were allowed without my approval.
Dominic had disappeared.
Eleanor wasn't answering Julian's calls.
And the two nurses who had restrained me were being questioned separately.
At 7:14 a.m., Dr. Grant entered my room.
She looked exhausted.
“We have a problem.”
Julian stood.
“What?”
“One of the nurses denies touching your wife.”
I wasn't surprised.
“And the other?”
Dr. Grant hesitated.
“She wants to speak with Clara privately.”
Julian looked at me.
I nodded.
He stepped outside.
Five minutes later, Nurse Rachel Kim entered.
She was the nurse who had held my right arm.
She looked nothing like the woman from the night before.
No confidence.
No coldness.
She looked terrified.
“I didn't know.”
I watched her carefully.
“Didn't know what?”
“That they were going to force you to sign.”
“You held me down.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was told you had become violent.”
“By whom?”
She swallowed.
“Dr. Warren.”
I knew the name.
He was the physician Eleanor had insisted oversee my delivery.
“Where is he?”
“He didn't come in this morning.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
I did.
People disappeared when evidence appeared.
Rachel reached into her pocket.
She placed a small envelope on my tray.
“What's that?”
“Cash.”
I didn't touch it.
“How much?”
“Five thousand dollars.”
“Who gave it to you?”
She looked toward the door.
“Dominic.”
“When?”
“Yesterday afternoon.”
Before the incident.
Before I had supposedly become violent.
The payment had been arranged in advance.
I felt my pulse quicken.
“What were you supposed to do?”
“Follow Dr. Warren's instructions.”
“And those instructions were?”
“If you became agitated, restrain you.”
I stared at her.
“Did he define agitated?”
Rachel looked ashamed.
“He said refusing the documents would qualify.”
There it was.
Not medical care.
A script.
“Why are you telling me this?”
Her lower lip trembled.
“Because Dominic called me thirty minutes ago.”
“What did he say?”
“He told me to destroy my phone.”
I leaned forward.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She placed it on the tray.
“There are messages.”
I opened them.
Dominic's name wasn't used.
But the number matched one I already had.
Instructions.
Payment confirmation.
A message telling Rachel exactly when Julian would leave the room.
That detail made my stomach turn.
“How did they know when Julian would leave?”
Rachel shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Julian returned after she left.
I showed him the messages.
He read them twice.
Then he stopped at the line about his departure.
His face went pale.
“My mother asked me to go downstairs.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“She texted me.”
“When?”
“About twenty minutes before everything happened.”
He pulled out his phone.
The message was still there.
Your uncle flew in to see the baby. Come downstairs. Clara needs rest anyway.
Julian sat down.
“She removed me from the room.”
“Yes.”
His expression hardened.
“She planned every minute.”
I looked at the messages again.
Something else bothered me.
Dominic knew the exact hospital room.
The exact schedule.
The exact nurses.
The exact time Julian would leave.
This operation required more than family influence.
It required someone inside the hospital.
Someone higher than two nurses.
Then Julian's phone rang.
Dr. Warren.
Julian answered.
“Where are you?”
A man's frightened voice came through the speaker.
“Don't say my name.”
Julian looked at me.
Dr. Warren continued.
“I made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“I helped your mother.”
Julian's jaw tightened.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you.”
Then Warren said something that changed the entire case.
May you like
“Eleanor isn't the person you should be afraid of.”
The call ended.
